As per the title, I have been tasked with picking up a cheap runabout for a family member. The cars we've been looking at are in the 1.4 diesel category, 2009 Fiestas and Polos both reliable cars in their own right.

Has anyone here any experience of these small diesel cars? Problems etc? Things to look out for (apart from the usual stuff )

The Toyota Corrola/Auris also has a 1.4 Diesel engine that may be worth a look.

Seen a few alright but any of the ones in her price range were 2.0D4D models and as the person driving it will be a 1st time driver, insurance will be tough..
