Bye bye Garda Traffic Corps

    I'm just reading An Garda Siochana's Modernisation and Renewal Programme 2016-2021 and I found this interesting;

    "Garda Roads Policing Unit
Having a dedicated Traffic Corps has played a key role in
reducing road fatalities. However, it will be strengthened
and redeveloped to merge road safety and crime
prevention and detection on the roads.
The function of the Garda Traffic Corps will be redeveloped
to take in more road policing functions. It will become
the Garda Roads Policing Unit. Working with non-traffic
personnel, it will work to deprive criminals the use of
the road network through high visibility policing and
intelligence-led enforcement operations. We will increase
the strength of the Roads Policing Unit by 2018."

Having watched BBC's Traffic Cops, AGS seems to be going down the road of the UK police forces' approach.

The handy little job in the traffic corps will be no more.

It seems sensible their remit is widened to include crime.

Ask any member over the years and they will tell you that's what they do anyway. It's not like they don't stop criminals and there have been some decent captures for traffic stops.

It is what they have been doing, that's what checkpoint is too crime checkpoint but I do like the renaming wanted it for long times

Its just accepting what was happening anyway. I always despised the term traffic Corps as some of its members felt - and sometimes were made to feel that they were some sort of elite. But this has also effectively disbanded any kind of specialist Traffic unit in the force.
There still needs to be some specialist traffic enforcement within the force. I doubt any ordinary member has much knowledge of or can get their heads around the plethora of regulations regarding HGV's etc.

Not unless the govt who always copy the UK on certain things empower the RSA to stop HGV/& buses like their counterparts do in the UK without the need of the police.

The beginning of the phasing out of 'Traffic corps' and the roll out of 'Roads Policing' on garda vehicles

It's a pity they wouldn't go as far as copying the UK with the same level of transport, equipment and training as well.

Typical management, see a few episodes of 'Road Wars' or 'Police Interceptors' and have a nice Homer "ohhh shiney" moment and then..."how can we do this on the cheap, it'll look great on my CV"
