    Hi all,

I require an up date with regard to a suitable Freeview PVR.

I currently use a Humax Fox HDR T2 which receives Terrestial TV from Preseli and also the Irish DTT channels as I am in the North Wexford area.

I have found this box very reliable and I recommended it to a friend also in the same area.

However Humax have advised that this box is no longer available and they are unable to confirm if any of their current boxes would operate in Ireland.

Can anyone advise me of a current similar box which can operate the same as the aforementioned Humax as it is some years now since I set up my own box and I am no longer up to date in these matters.

The Panasonic range of Freeview recorders will work with Saorview and will allow the Irish channels to be reordered as required unlike the Humax box I believe, no series link or subtitles for the Irish channels, recordings can be scheduled via the epg.

One of the lads here from NI uses a Panasonic for Saorview and Freeview reception, do a search for Panasonic here on the terrestrial forum for the discussions.

I have a Panasonic Freeview HD PVR purchased in late 2013 (think this particular model is discontinued) and I highly recommend Panasonic:
    1) Receives and records both Saorview and Freeview from one epg.
    2) Has sensitive tuner.
    3) As stated above it will reorder channels.
Unfortunately as stated above no subtitles or series link for Saorview programmes and for some reason very bare information re Saorview programmes but otherwise excellent product.

    Hi,
I am new to Boards, but can anyone help with a Freeview Recorder that will receive and record both Saorview and UK channels? A friend has a Humax HDR- Fox T2 which is no longer in production. Humax cannot say whether the replacement model (I think a HDR2000T) will receive Irish channels.

Welcome to boards, the Panasonic PVRs linked to above are worth considering if you receive the UK channels via an aerial from a UK transmitter.

Many thanks for quick response. Not entirely happy with Panasonic reviews! Can anyone inform me if the Humax HDR-2000T can receive Saorview and UK channels? Humax themselves cannot answer my query. I already have a Humax Freesat box, but am interested in cancelling my Sky contract, hence interest in Freeview.

This PVR is a Freeview HD model and will definitely receive both Freeview and Saorview. I haven't bought one of these but I assume you will be able to timer record from the one epg. An older Sony Freeview HD PVR model I bought in 2011 only let me timer record from same system as PVR was tuned into and you could therefore not timer record from both Saorview/Freeview at the same time. Only way round this was to manually record from both. However I think the odds are that this Humax model will be able to timer record from both Freeview/Saorview.

    Digifriendly,

Many thanks for that information. As mentioned I already have a Freesat Humax box which has worked perfectly well for the past five years or so. However, I am considering cancelling my subscription to Sky, hence my interest in a combo Freeview box. Hopefully the Freeview box would be as easy to use.

No the layout is as per the picture but you have programme details and can record but like the Panasonic there is no series link

Decided to get rid of Sky. I have a freesat box for the UK channels so that is sorted. I need a solution for Saorview channels. The new Saorview Connect does not record and from reviews sounds like it's a piece for s*^t ! There doesn't seem to be any Saorview Plus boxes available.
What would you recommend as a solution for Soarview HD that can do 7 day EPG and record. Ideally it would have series link too. Want to keep it as a simple STB so will not be planning a linux box etc...
    Thanks in advance

I use a Samsung hdr 8900m Which does all of the above, has RTE, 3, TG4 players, its wifi with Netflix YouTube. Cuppled with a Humax freesat box, a one4all remote operates both.

By the way,I saw a Humax freeview hdr (fvp400) in Curry's, Jervis centre, sale bin, today for 100e, if you are near. It wont do the Irish players but I read on here that a number of people use them to record Saorview, might be worth checking out.

Does this box series link ?  Any thoughts on where to pick it up ?

Yes, works fine with series link, I got mine in Curry's, they have others, mainly Panasonic but I don't know if they do series link or the Irish players.

Actually found a Walker PVR box in local shop and picked this up for €150. It's 500GB and dual tuners. Does the job so next step it the call to Sky, that will be fun trying to get disconnected.

That sounds v expensive - that Walker is ancient and incredibly slow (I have one) but as you say does the job. I paid about 90 for it in Soundstore about 2 years ago when I ditched Sky and went with a separate Humax for Freesat

Yes, pricey but was surprised to find it in local shop as they do not seem to be made anymore.  It will tide me over till saorview connect is stabilized and adds recording...

Wouldn't rush into Saorview Connect even when recording capability is added if you're going to use it as a combo box.
For Saorview only absolutely no issues (other than steep price)
My parents have one so I speak from experience

Main gripe - switching between Saorview/Satellite takes a lot of button presses and is slow (it's similar to going from freesat to non-freesat on a Humax)
Satellite scan only orders the first few channels correctly (eg BBC1/2,UTV,C4 ..) After that it's a case of manually hiding all the ones you don't want and manually sorting the list into your desired order
If you need to rescan at any point I suspect you go through all that heartache again though cannot confirm

Thanks. Would only every use saorview connect for Irish channels. I have a freesat box for the UK stuff.  Anyway I've gone soarview plus box for now as I think the saorview connect will take a year  settledown.

I have the saorview connect combi box for a good while now along with a humax freesat box.

I don't use the satellite on the connect as it is a waste of time compared to the ability of a humax with 7 day epg and series link.

Series link or recording is not a huge issue for me on connect. I find the rollback guide on the connect box really handy and have no real need to record now. It would be nice to have timeshift capability (pause, rewind live tv) but it is not a huge issue for me.

The rollback is brilliant when there is nothing on but you can then flick back to the previous day or 3 or 4 days back. It makes finding a programme handy and there is always some decent programme you have missed.

They do need to put up past programmes instantly and introduce 'watch from the start' which I believe is on the way.
