    The N11

Much of that is also motorway though.

The old M9 is now the R448 from Waterford to Naas, still as sh!t as ever but with less traffic.

Google maps, one you have selected your route, tap the 3dots, and select route options & avoid highway.

Did you go onto the aa route planner site and goto options and move the motor way button from right to left?

    https://www.theaa.ie/routes/#/r/Waterford,Ireland/Dublin,Ireland/

There's always an alternative to a motorway for every journey. Which is why some N roads have 120km limits, no alternative route but built to motorway standard.

Waterford, New Ross, Clonroche, Enniscorthy, Ferns, Camolin, Gorey, Arklow then hit the coast road on from Arklow towards Wicklow, Rathnew, Ashford, Newtown, Kilpedder, Kilmac and Bray, you're as good as into Dublin then, should do it in under 4hrs.

We'll call that the scenic route.

To be fair if the OP is going to south Dublin, that's probably the best way.

If you count from Waterford city, that's around a 90 mile spin and only the final 25 ish (Arklow - Bray) is motorway anyway, the rest is a main route, albeit on terrible roads.

I drove it for years between work and college.

In fairness it's not a bad road at all. 2.5 hours give or take.Nothing more soul destroying than driving on motorways.

L drivers mainly avoid motorway even though there are seldom checkpoints on motorways
