Can anyone tell me what the correct oil is to put in an 05 VW POLO 1.2?

And is there any difference between synthetic and semi-synthetic?

    Thanks.

    Yes.

    Synthetic, made in a lab.

Semi-synthetic, usually a blend of lab and actual mineral oil.

Synthetic is (normally) more expensive, but do not skimp on oil. Always use the recommended spec and blend. Its one of the fastest ways to ruin a car.

I'm sure they'd rather sell that!

    True.

    Mister auto, seems to recommend
    0 30
    5 30
    5 40

    5w30. Acea c3. Vw 504 00/507 00.

That's the recommended but c3 is overkill on a petrol. No need for low ash oil when using proper fuel.

    Any 5w30 will do it.

So 5w30 or 5w40 synthetic oil.

    Thanks for the replies.

Could putting semi-synthetic in damage the car? Think I have used that in the past...

Using semi-synthetic oil will not damage car.
You can also switch between the two but best is to choose one and stay with it.

I'd echo the advice to use the recommended oil. I have always stuck to castrol edge 5w30 vw spec on my 04 1.4 petrol golf and it's done just shy of 200k miles without any engine issues. I have always tried to get the edge on special. I have used quantum 5w30 oil a couple of times too as it's a bit cheaper (and 5 litres, edge is 4) and it is what the VW group use in their dealerships. Apparently it is the same as castrol edge, just different branding. If going that route shop around, you may get it cheaper in a skoda dealership than an audi one for example. I use fully synthetic, but semi should also be fine.
