Broadband options Dublin/Meath border

Hope someone can offer advice. I am investigating broadband options for a sibling living in Gormanston, Co. Meath. I've used practically all forms of broadband known to man myself -- fixed line, cable, wireless, cellular, satellite. However I abandoned fixed line years ago when Eircom couldn't get my speed above 2Mbps. So I'm not au fait with these new fibre offerings.

I looked up Eir's fibre coverage map and see one cabinet (BRN2_006) about a kilometre south east of the location and another (BRN2_028) a little over a kilometre west. On checking the person's phone number with Eir they say that "up to 7Mb broadband is available". Initially I assumed that was old-style ADSL and not the fibre offering, but Digiweb have a line checker also and their site has a better breakdown:

DSL Enabled: Yes - 2 MB
NGB Enabled: Yes - 2 MB
Fibre Enabled: Yes - 7 MB

So, I am just beginning to realise that FTTC does not offer any better speeds than ADSL if you are far from the cabinet.

And my questions are: does this look like what you would expect, i.e. max. of 7 Mb/s (and maybe worse) at a distance of c. 1km from a fibre-enabled cabinet? Are these the sort of connections Eir, Vodafone etc. are offering for €45-50/month, advertised as "up to 100 Mb/s"? Does that price include "line rental" or is that extra?

What other sort of broadband might be available in the area? I know Digiweb aren't too far away, so maybe have wireless broadband, e.g. Metro? Anyone have any experience of speed/stability of any wireless package in the area? My own experience of wireless in the past was extremely bad but that could have been bad luck.

    Thanks in advance.

Chances are their cab is more than 1500m away, not 1km. Cable routes can be weird and you arent always on the closest.

Line rental is included, for somebody used to a 2Mb link 7Mb would be manageable. No Imagine FibreConnect there(4G) so not many alternatives.

Roger that Ed E. It's 1 km as the crow flies, probably longer as the cable runs. This person doesn't have any broadband at all at the moment. It was me that used to have 2 Mb ... nowadays I have 240 Mb Virgin Media, and even out in the sticks in another location I am getting 20 Mb on cellular. I thought 2 Mb went out with the Indians and even 7 Mb with FTTC sounds pretty crappy. Obviously I've been spoiled. :P

I presume the latency and jitter on such a connection is still reasonably low? I used to run VoIP and Skype quite acceptably on 2 Mb as long as the connection was stable.
