I'm looking to buy a laptop to last me for the next couple of years and through college. It needs to be relatively powerful but not over the top expensive. I just want to know where you guys would recommend I buy one. I know Argos has some good deals but are they actually any good when it comes down to the specs. Any help is appreciated, Thanks!

    Argos?
Pretty much everything they sell is underpowered junk tbh

I'd rather buy from Dell direct.

laptopsdirect.ie were decent for me anyway. Not sure what everyone else would make of them.
There is also PCSpecialist which do custom models.

I would suggest buying it from Amazon.

I've always taken the view that if you don't need the portability, then go for the PC. PCs are much easier when it comes to upgrading or replacing components e.g. graphics card, and generally you'll get more power and a bigger screen for your buck. Unfortunately, if it turns out later that you do need the portability, you're screwed. :)

Why does it need to be relatively powerful and what do you intend you use it for? Will good 3D performance be a requirement, for example. Are you a gamer?

I am a bit of a gamer but I'm doing an animation course for the next roughly 5 years so I'll need it for that also I hope to get into graphic design myself so I'll be doing that kinda thing aswell

In that case you'll need a good graphics card e.g. nVidia or Radeon. This means that a lot of the good-looking laptop offers won't be of any use to you, because they'll have something like "Integrated Intel Graphics" which often doesn't cut the mustard.

As a general rule of thumb, when buying a computer, don't skimp. Buy the best you can afford. Before parting with your money, read product reviews...the worst ratings first. Have you decided how much you can afford?

Have you looked at any of these?

I'd be wary just based on the awful past of Irish pc suppliers. The laptops look like customised Clevo/Sager offerings based on some quick googling. You'll probably get a better price by speccing one out on PCSpecialist instead.

Is this offer any good? I'm thinking of purchasing but i'm not sure how much the actual saving is, or how good the laptop is relative to the price?

You can buy them from any computer store or you can get them online at Amazon . Harvery Normans and \Soundstore sell them.

Amazon, the service is second to none.

DO NOT buy from DSG (PC World, Curry's or Dixons) they are an absolute nightmare to deal with if anything goes wrong.

    Amazon.de? Or just regular Amazon?

http://amazon.co.uk surely? Amazon de will land you with a German keyboard.... qwertz would get annoying fast!

  • Registered Users Posts: 360 ✭✭Phantasos

Of course! The keyboard! That could've been awkward...

It's not the worst if you can touch type. Just change layout to UK and it's just a keyboard with incorrect labels :)

I would still say it's a bad idea. Looking for symbols would be a nightmare. I can touch type, but still need to double check where |>%*~ are! The German layout is completely different, there's more than just the z and y swapped.

Yup, it's definitely not for everyone but if there is a good looking deal, and you think you can handle a few different labels, it's an option :)

Edit: I will also say that Windows 10 is a bit finicky about changing language from the default German on those laptops. I changed every option I could find, yet some windows menus continued to display german. Probably would be a good idea to reinstall windows on them.

If its really a hassle - keyboards, the dell laptops especially, are pretty easily to swap out for a uk one - couple screws usually. Usual places - Ebay/Amazon for replacement keyboards.

    “Roll it back”
