I'm struggling on the greens these days last round I had 40 putts but went around in 86 off 12hcp. My main problem is distance control. I am working on putting to the fringes etc. but wondering if it could be equipment related. Just need some one good to look at my set up and tendencies also look at my equipment.

I had a putting session with Neil Manchip at the GUI academy which I felt was very good although he's not cheap.

I'd also ask if you've tried one of the superstroke grips - it completely transformed my putting from abysmal to reasonable, albeit with a little practice as well.

What kind of putter do you use?

I'm no 12 h/c but i was always putting passed the hole and leaving myself terrible 3 -6 footers back, I reckon I am now gaining about 4 to 6 shots per hole since I made 2 small changes.

Prev I used to always have the same pre-shot routine and after taking my glove off and having 2 practice strokes Id line up and shoot.

boom - passed the hole - always!

Now my routing is have a practice stroke or two while waiting for someone else to putt and keep the glove on - when it comes to my putt i take a bit more time and think about the leaving a tap in - one practice stroke and putt ( with glove on- I'm finding this helps me).

Ive been doing this for about a month now and my putting has dramatically improved.
So much so that with keeping the glove on I'm considering one of those fat grips on my putter,

You might be looking for some instructor to tell you more about alignment or rotation but it might also be worth a try,

    GL with whatever you decide.

Not sure where you're based but if Leinster I'd recommend my club pro Shane O'Grady in BlackBush. He's pretty expensive at €90 an hour but has coached a lot of high level amateurs and has really improved my own putting and understanding of the short stick.

what do you mean by this?

if your problem is mainly distance control, I am not really sure that a lesson is going to sort that out. get your pace sorted first, then worry about the rest

IMO, for better distance control, you need to practice more. If you play different courses, green speed will be different everywhere and can cause your head to melt going from fast to slow to medium greens.

If you play mostly in one club, you should have a better chance of getting to grips with the pace, and the more you hit balls, the better the "feel" will become.

it could be equipment related. perhaps a heavier putter might suit you better. go window shopping and try some out. if your own club has a pro shop, go in and spend an hour or 2 trying out different putters on the practice green.

I was having awful problems with my putting for the past 3-4 months. Read Bob Rotellas putting book and transformed me. Went from 36+ putts to less than 30 in a few weeks and instantly feel more confident on the greens.

I have to agree that I found this approach good - the key points being that you need to trust your brain and body to make the putt. Thinking mechanically or about distance is the death of good putting. I'd consider myself a decent lag putter now and I never think about how hard I'm going to hit it.

    Well worth a read

In my experience too many people are aiming to sink long putts. I don't expect to sink anything outside 12 - 15 feet or so. I'm always lagging and some will fall in. When you look at the odds of sinking say a 40 footer its about 3% or so. I see people racing a 30 footer past the hole and because is skimmed by the hole people are saying aw unlucky good putt. It wasn't a good put if you end up 6 feet past.

I have a Scott Cameron fast back with a superstroke 3 grip also I have a odyssey #7 tank armlock putter. I struggle with distance control mainly lag putting.

I have a heavier putter but sometimes I don't release the putter if you know what I mean. Then it ends up short. If I could settle on a system of putting I could work from there but I'm the whole time tweaking.
