I am over in the UK for a couple of days next week. I'll have the chance to play two rounds when I'm there.

I am looking for recommendations - preferably not links course.

I'll be staying in London but will have a car and am willing to travel for a decent course.

I am think of playing the Belfry and maybe Chart Hills - thoughts?

Ideally I'm not looking to spend mad money on green fees. I'm probably willing to pay up to about £70.

If you have the money, off the top of my head Sunningdale and Wentworth are must play courses.

Sunningdale are closed for hollow tying apparently.

Belfry is a good spot. a fair spin from London though, traffic can be a mare. you also realise belfry is not south England, it is in Birmingham?

Ha, yes I know it's not in South England. I guess by South England I meant anywhere within 2 - 2.5 hours of London!

Yes, it'll be over two hours to get there but I'm ok with that. I have two days put aside for golf so don't mind the drive.

I was even considering Celtic Manor.

Woburn? Just outside Milton Keynes easy to get to up the M1
    http://www.woburngolf.co.uk/booking-information/visitor-green-fees/
Three courses, one of which was used for the Womens Open last weekend No idea on fees but I would guess £100ish midweek which is a bit over budget

    The Grove outside Watford
    https://www.thegrove.co.uk/golf/
Hosting the British Masters in a couple of months so may not be open to visitors (and is much more expensive than I thought!!)

Buckinghamshire Golf Club, Not as famous as the other 2 perhaps but a great course, I know it pretty well, very close to the A40/M25
    http://www.buckinghamshiregc.com/
Has hosted the Womens European Masters Tour event & the Mens Open qualifying. Midweek fees are £90 I think

    http://www.toothillgolfclub.co.uk/tariffs
Cheaper less glamorous option - maybe do this and one of the more glamorous courses to keep in budget??

Try Thorndon Park in Brentwood, Essex. It's quite exclusive but I know it rather well. Great course.

The Belfry is surely £150+ for a round? Or at least the Brabazon course would be anyway.

You can get great deals on it. Still three tee times today left at £60. http://www.teeofftimes.co.uk/brabazon-the-belfry/

Standard price is £160 for Brabazon but lots of discounted rates.

Walton Heath near Epsom, its an amazing golf course, has 2 top class courses, holds the US Open qualifiers every year and has hosted plenty of tour events and the ryder cup.

Walton Heath courses are very nice but it can be hard to get a game .

Epsom Golf Club itself is a nice quirky old golf course (if i remember correctly there is only one bunker on the whole course). It is on the chalk downs near to the racecourse and plays very fast like a summer links. It used to be a pretty resonable green-fee but I haven't been there for years. Easy to get to from South/Central London.
