So I was reading the thread earlier about the current crop of 2fm presenters and the contract madness etc and the thought about all the fantastic presenters that were on 2fm back in the day and how a lot of the current crop just don't measure up. Why have standards fallen so far ?

I somehow ended up on Andy Mangan's podcast website and listened to a 45 minute interview with Jim O Neill (which was fantastic by the way - have a listen)

This might be a jock's jock thing, but it occurred to me that I would struggle to say wow about anyone new in the last couple of years with such a fantastic voice as Jim O Neill or even John O Hara back in the day. Does anyone feel the same or is it just me ?

In terms of iconic and instantly recognisable voices, I don't think the late, great Johnny Lyons will ever be beaten.

Bob Gallico and Jason Maine for me. Can't think of any decent radio voices on air anymore.

Honorable mention for Tony Fenton (RIP) who's voice is much missed from the airwaves

Using the criteria of the sound of the voice alone, I think the best voices on radio have been Jim O'Neill, Jason Maine, Tom Hardy, Mark Cagney, Jimmy Grealey, Chris Cary, Hugh O'Brien and John Clarke

Tom Dunne is very soothing if not in the iconic category just yet

I think Derek Mooney sounds good when reading scripted items but for me the iconic voice has to be Tony Allan.

Derek Davis and Terry Wogan are/were the pinnacle for me. Very soothing to listen to either of them.
