Trying to find a children's book

This is going to be really vague, but at some point during national school, I read a book by an Irish (I think) author.
I think a child (or two?) somehow went into an alternate universe and met a character called Bally or something similar. Bally may have been a ball? Part of the story was Bally did something (maybe dies) and that's why some many areas in Ireland are called ballysomething.

Can't remember what age I was, it just occurs to me every so often and annoys me for a few hours. Google hasn't helped since I'm not even really sure what I'm looking for.

    Any help appreciated.
