maintenance calculation

I am in the separation process, unmarried with 2 kids, my ex owns a house and the mortgage is under her name.
I earn almost twice as she does.
If we can't agree about how much maintenance I should pay then the first logical option is to go through mediation, if we fail then we go to court.
How the mediation process work? Is mediation better than court? How much will a lawyer cost if we go to court?

Regarding her mortgage, am I supposed to participate or not?

As far as I know she can claim the FIS, back to school allowance, probably a GP/medical card, is there anything else that she can claim?
    Can I claim anything myself?

She wants the amount paid in maintenance to vary based on school holidays (pay more for a child minder) and so on, this option doesn't suit me as I need to have a budget and stick to it, will a judge allow this option or not?

How much roughly should I pay for maintenance for 2 kids? And finally, once my kids will reach the age of 23 then I won't pay any maintenance for them but should I pay any maintenance to my ex taking into consideration that we were never married?

Go to mediation and see if you can come to an agreement.

And why on earth do you think you wouldn't have to pay maintenance as you were never married?

If you were together more than two years, she's entitled to more than just maintenance which should all be worked through in mediation.
