    Hi all,

Looking for some advice here please. I was stuck in approx 2 hrs traffic last Friday and for the first time ever the dpf light came on the dash. Eventually I got out to the motorway and after 10 mins the light went off (kept it in 4th at 3000rpm).

Today I was in the city and again while I was driving around it was again regenerating for about 25 mins (I made sure to keep the revs high in 2/3rd) and I was also just off the motorway after a 25 min spin. I have 240kms on the car.

All feedback welcome please as I am sure ppl have experience with this before. I am wondering if I need to get this removed or cleaned or something else.

    Cheers.

You would be better off getting the car scanned by a garage with a diagnostic computer to determine if a fault code was logged on the car's ECU. It could be a dirty or faulty sensor rather than the DPF itself.

I assume it's an VRS with the PD 170 BMN 2L TDI engine?

Either way at that mileage I think you have done well to get this far! Servicing and using the correct oil is a biggy on DPF cars, make sure it's VW Spec 507.00 I believe.

Problem is, if it needs replacing that is about €1500 or there abouts which is a chunk to be paying out on a 9 year old car, again if you like it do it as rules are changing on the NCT.

You could try a terraclean, I have heard they can work wonders.

I've the DPFs gutted on both my cars, looks like it is there from below, but it is empty. Had to get it mapped out of the ecu to ignore the sensors, and not to perform a regen, Still passes the NCT because the engine only really smokes under load, and they don't do the emissions tests under load

Thanks, would you be able to PM me the name of the guy who done it for you please?

I got it done in the UK before I even bought the car over here, took a few hours, and cost just shy of 400 for that, got it mapped at the same time so I'm not fully sure of the cost breakdown. I left with a lighter wallet and a faster car though :D

If you could arrange time to come to Fermoy some day there is a garage here that specialises in this. I have recommended them to several members here.
They will do a dpf delete and map it out as well. They can also offer you a proper remap which give decent gains on the RS, Well worth doing.

I am not connected to them in any form, I just know them from doing work for me previously and are highly regarded around here.
They also use a dyno to give you before and after figures.

Have the injectors been done? There was a recall on these and a good few souls have complained about DPF issues after the change. Other issues were botched seals causing the oil in the sump to rise.....a lot on info on briskoda.net about horror stories.

The engine management light wouldn't normally come on during a regeneration....at least my mondeo doesn't......are you sure it was performing a regeneration?
The cooling fan would have been on at full pelt at the same time.

The engine mgmt light did not come on. The dpf light came on.

Then that just means there is a high volume of ash/soot in the dpf...
Might be worth getting a regeneration donedone manually.

Again during a regen I have heard people saying that you should put an electric load on the car, lights, heating, heated seats etc

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,043 ✭✭✭GustavoFring

They so that themselves automatically. Heated mirrors and rear window heater switch on even though their switches say different.

Thats good mileage for a dpf op.
I had about the same miles on my owncar and nothing would clean it while it was on the car.
I took it off and sent it away to get cleaned .
    So far so good .
    About 260 euro.job done.

    Really... never knew that

On the subject, how would one know if their car is doing a regen whilst they're driving about?

Car will feel slightly sluggish, might high idle with the engine fan running, will be an audible 'purring' low note from the exhaust, depending on the model you might get a fume smell inside and it might also start to smoke say in traffic

Makes sense.. I've noticed the purring note occasionally and also I've arrived home from work to find the fan still going even after shutting her down, again only occasionally.

Does it matter if the car is shut down before regen is complete?

Doesn't really matter but over time incomplete regens will end up with a blocked dpf.
I arrived to Loughrea for a meeting this morning and as I was pulling into the car park I noted I could hear the rad fan on full blast.
Engine idle speed was up a little too.
I was early for my meeting so kept the engine running to allow it to complete.
It took about 10 mins.and then settled down once it had finished.
Mines a 2.0 tdci mondeo..they are known for giving problems with the dpf.
Luckily I do 99% motorway driving.

Correct low ash oil grade , regular constant high rev blasts, oil changes ahead of schedule, disable that stop/start thing (it's also heavy on your alternator)
And allowing your turbo to cool down,

Doing all this will hopefully be good for your dpf, and help reduce carbon build up.

    Prevention is better can cure.

    But when all else fails....

    Delete the dpf
