This kid in Dublin zoo

In todays papers, stood the wrong side of the Rhino enclosure for 20 mins said one eye witness....excuse my ignorance not been to the zoo since I was a schoolkid but what do staff do there, 20 mins is a long time .......what if Isis decided to attack the monkey enclosure what then then? is everyone off having a kitkat?

Not the wisest thing to do, I wouldn't recommend it. But I don't think the witch hunt is really necessary.

I'm sure if Rhinos could climb up that mound of rocks there'd be more than some 2x4 and chicken wire to protect it.

Let them. We can't police everybody 100% of the time. If parents can't be responsible for their own kids, then why should a stranger do it?

Where the rhinos are in the zoo you have to go up into like a cul de sac it's off the 'main road' so to speak. I think that the zoo keepers trust that most normal people especially in light of recent events would not endanger their own child

I'm sure 20mins was an extreme exaggeration. You'd be bored out of your mind standing around looking at a rhino for 20mins and these people didn't look like the type to have a long attention span in general :rolleyes:

I assume a lot more than that tiny 4ft fence with a bit of chicken mesh stands between you and the Rhino anyway.

That will definitely need a team of 8 plus a project manager an engineer and an expert in the field to investigate.. it's not a simple as father lifts child over fence.

They won't jump over the dugout because of one kid not moving closer to them.

Agree with a lot of the previous posters, if the Rhinos could get up that high, then chicken wire and wooden poles and going to much to stop it now. Probably a bad thing for a parent to do, in case the child does it while the parent is not there, believing it safe to do so, but yeah, I dont get the outrage over this. His dad was standing right over him. If anything went down, the dad would pick him up and run.

The kid in the gorilla killing incident a while back was over the fence, which in turn was 4ft back from the moat which separated the gorillas from people. And the kid still managed to fall/climb into the moat. The child in Dublin Zoo was only safe as long as he didn't slip/fall/climb down those rocks. Rhinos can run at 50km/h - faster than you're allowed drive down the quays in Dublin. Rhinos are pretty inquisitive, and will run towards something unusual. So yeah, it was utter stupidity at work.

This story made it all the way to the Daliy Mail UK online (chief purveyor of outrage). There were commentators calling for child protective services to be called. That's ridiculous, they'd never make it through the training, and where would you get breathing apparatus to fit them? Bet they'd be crap at the paramedic/CPR bits too. I'd say they'd fail out on the first day.

There is a large moat between the rhinos and the chicken wire where the child was standing would be a 6 ft maybe more wall between him and the rhinos and while in the photo it looks like he's on the level with them anytime I've been up there ( which is a lot I live locally and am a year pass owner) they are usually way way back from where he is... I would say the hold us actually quite safe where he is... It would be if something unexpected happened like he fell backwards or something. Most sane people are ok with this level of security but there's always one

From pics I've seen, that fence is far too low.

Anyone who is out for a laugh, or where the kid is God can just place the kid or themselves over the fence.

Fence needs to be raised big time to stop this nutty behaviour.

The poor child was probably terrified, but the adult may have been laughing.

Dublin Zoo.... get yer act together. There was another incident not too long ago aswell involving a child.

Something doesn't seem right about it all just the same. Can't put my finger on it though.

No, the fence is fine, people just need not to be ****ing morons. That's why children are supposed to be accompanied by an adult, so that kids can't accidentally get in there. Maybe they need to make it clear that the accompanying adults shouldn't be thick.

If they are going to keep them imprisoned the least they could do is make sure they are safe, making it easy for stupid people to access them is not keeping then safe

The real solution is to take down the useless and pointless wire fence so that people can get more realistic photos - all those rocks and moats and stuff are quite sufficient to keep adventurous kids away from irritated rhinos.

The parents of that child should sue. Could be a few quid in it for them.

In fact the man could be due some compensation too, people are saying he's an idiot. It's the zoo's fault for making the fence so low that he looks stupid.

Can the rhino sue? Somebody call a lawyer, stat!
