2400sq ft house with open plan living area/dining/kitchen and very large openings in windows, sliding doors. Thinking of upgrading my insulation and new heating system. Any recommendations for new heating system?

Are you near a gas main? What sort of existing heating? How old is the house? What type of windows do you have?

insulate the crap out of it. . 16" minimum
make sure all the windows and doors are sealing correctly
put in a stove in stead of the open fire
make sure you have good curtains and blinds on the windows and doors. it makes a huge difference.
make sure all rads are working and are not blocked by couch's and curtains etc

make sure the boiler is upgraded to the most efficient one available

You don't need to power a back boiler from a stove. They are just way more efficient than an open fire, and ours stays warm for 12+ hours after a fire.

    its all about perspective.
a small stove only heating a small room will use very little fuel but a big 30 kw heating 16 rads will use a lot more.

have you access to fuel like turf and timber . if you have to buy it in on a weekly basis then you are wasting your time with solid fuel for anything other that a tiny stove. the fuel you buy in bags or off of a lad in a van on a weekly basis is usually wet and crap. you should have timber and turf for a few years . I see people burning it and you can hear the water sizzling in the fire

OP, is this crap answer is the best answer you can be bothered to give to a serious question that is designed to help you?
Thought so, nothing to see here move along.

House is 2400sq ft, south facing, double glazing, open fire, oil heating, aero board 50mm insulation in cavity and floor, fibreglass insulation in voids of attic. open planned living/kitchen/dining area, large windows at back and front of house. double doors on both corners of dining. House losses heat very quickly in winter time.

Have access to bog so turf will be free. Will also use coal.
