They're a temperamental machine at the best of times and rust is another widespread issue with them. Engine wise 200tdi or preferably the 300tdi. 4k won't buy much of a defender though and there's much better options for the money or less

Tbh I'd love one myself but I'd prefer not to be repairing something every other weekend on my days off. They're very easy to work on though. For 4k you would get a nice pre 03 landcruiser and they are the very definition of reliability and alot more comfortable in every way than a defender. The pre d4d ones were better imo than the post 03 and current lc. I've a 3.2 auto pajero myself and very happy with it. The defender is a great farm vehicle though and seems to hold value very well.

I have a 1993 110 with a 200tdi - Paid €2200 for it and put about €5k into it, actually thinking about it I probably put a good bit more than that ;-)

Anyways - my 110 needed 4 new tyres, a new bulkhead, new doors, chassis repairs (front only) when I bought it. However the suspension had all been upgraded and the rest of the chassis was in great condition.

I fitted new rad, intercooler, hoses, turbo, timing kit, alternator, battery, Lexus IS200 front seats, Renault Scenic rear seats, LED lights, rock sliders, winch bumper, winch, steering protector, stereo, alloys, wheel spacers and got the whole thing resprayed.

So if you have €4k to spend, I'd suggest that you buy something for €2/3k and budget the rest for repairs/maintenance.

    hope this helps
    YB
