Another day another massacre in USA. Not much information on the story as yet. But seems to be another attack on people at nightclubs. One woman confirmed dead and 3 others with gunshot wounds. Attacks occurred at multiple areas in Austin apparently

It's not really a "massacre", is it?

It is all under control, seems to be 1 woman aged in her 30's dead and 4 injured.

It happened on the main entertainment street in Austin. It also happened close to where my accommodation is when I will be there in October.

Bad 24 hours for the Austin area with the balloon crash yesterday and the deaths of 16 people.

Ban hot air balloons and streets.

Donald Trump is the man to sort these shootings out.

    /sarcasm.

    Terrible stuff.

That incident wouldn't have happened if everybody had a hot air balloon.

Well no a mass shooting, but when I made the thread the news story was roughly 'multiple victims in multiple shootings in Austin' with not much other information so they made it sound worse than it turned out to be

    Yawn!

Austin has about 280 murders and 5000 rapes a year, just another normal day.

It is a rather depressing reaction.

"Only one dead so far? Pff, in my day we had proper massacres.."

6th Street in Austin is probably my favourite place anywhere to go out drinking. Looks like it happened right there after bars closed. crazy stuff

For those who haven't been there, it's the equivalent of having a shooting in Temple Bar

Is there such a thing as an inactive shooter?

Active is referring to the situation not the shooter

Technically, every American is an inactive shooter

Yep, like when an active rapist is arrested we still call him a rapist when he's in jail

But "we" don't because we speak english

"active shooter" is just a term the american LEO types came up with for a situation that the american media and public picked up on. Because americans love expert jargon even more than they love guns. Jargon that's then picked up over here by people who know no better :o

Here in the sensible world, we can just say that there's a gunman on the loose in austin or wherever.

    Be sensible.

You should "reach out" to the BBC for clarification :D

I think we're getting to the stage now where it's like we hear about a shooting and instead of rushing to turn on the news, we ask, "How many killings?" like how that pair on the League of Gentlemen used to ask, and if it's any less than 5, we scoff and put the remote down.

Unless, that is, the shooter has some sort of gimmick like they're livestreaming or dressed in some sort of outlandish apparel. And not to be facetious here. I really do think that's how it's getting.

"Active situation" makes a lot more sense to me than when you have the news outlets saying the suspect is "still at large"

What does "at large" mean? Active situation is more descriptive

This was 2 separate unrelated incidents. Four women were shot on 6th street and one died. This perpetrator is still at large but it's not an active shooting situation. The other incident took place in a parking garage. A man took out a gun and fired it at another person but was disarmed and tackled to the ground by witnesses. No injuries in that situation, besides the attacker

    Another day in the USA.

There were three shot dead yesterday at a party here in seattle. You only get a small number of these incidents making national news, they're usually just local stories.
