For those interested in spending their Sunday afternoon watching runners sink 4 beers while running a mile, the Beer Mile World Classic is being streamed live. First race is at 2pm which races every 30 mins until 5pm when the elite women's race is, and then the elite men are at 5:30pm. No idea what time I'll be racing but between 2pm and 3pm at a guess. Live stream here:

By a weird quirk of fate I actually watched the race live and the footage was from quite a distance so you can't really see any detail. Beer was skulled unbelievably quickly. There must have been some particular technique employed.

Unofficially I ran 8:43 today at the Beer Mile World Classic. Still awaiting official results. 16 seconds slower than my PB but my second fastest beer mile ever with Kingston Rules approved beer (Brooklyn Lager bottles). Bit disappointed to miss the PB. Could have committed more on the early laps but was worried I'd explode later on by doing so, so had a lot in the tank for a fast final 200. But overall delighted to pull it together well in such a fun event. Particularly great to catch up with some real stalwarts from the Melbourne beer mile scene after a couple of years. Finished the day off running the lead off leg in a 4x400 beer relay after an absolute fist full of beer. Had a shocker with the can of Heineken in 29 seconds but managed to run the 400m straight after in 65 seconds which I am strangely proud of. Great event all in all. And Cory Bellemore's outrageous world record of 4:34 was something that needed to be seen to be believed. Truly staggering.

Check out these truly ridiculous splits by Bellemore:

    1st beer (B) + lap (L): 1:03
    B2: 7.61
    L2: 1:01.84
    B3: 10.05
    L3: 1:01.63
    B4: 9.68
    L4: 59.66

    1st beer + 1st lap = 63 seconds?

    Really?

    I'd fully believe it.

I was being sincere actually. I'm not a drinker so maybe I'm just naive to how easy it is to drink beer quickly but I was genuinely astonished at how quickly they were consumed and was thinking back to my student days when bendy straws were employed to create some kind of vacuum which allowed the liquid to flow down an open throat (or at least that's how it was explained to me). I assume that straws aren't permitted and weren't used but I was wondering if there was a particular technique employed by the winner to drink the beer.

No straws allowed. There are techniques to maximise speed of flow. But a lot of the speed of drinking can be explained by the fact that these guys are genetic freaks at necking beer.

Ah yes, beer and Irish runners... If the Irish 20KM per week brigade didn't have the incentive of booze and burritos they'd be ... Kenyan... #fail #haterzgonnahate

Are you referring to the new record or to yourself at the end of the evening :p

It all depends on the quality of the mileage. 20km is pretty low alright, but we all know people who boast about doing 25k a day with rubbish race times, don't we?
