I have a old drill that has burned out, so I am going to dispose of it, However the Chuck is Ok and I would like to save it. It is one you would use a chuck key with, can anybody tell me how I would remove it from the drill?

Open it up fully and if you look down inside there should be a screw, remove that.
After that you need to hold than mandril tight and the chuck should screw off, left hand thread from memory.

The screw in the centre of the chuck is also LH thread iirc. so be careful not to damage it by trying to turn it clockwise.

Surely if it's a LH thread it will loosen when turned clockwise?

Thanks Sean, very useful advice but as the contributor above states to turn the screw clockwise would loosen a left hand thread screw, is this not so?

You state "older drill" if the drill does not have a reverse it could be a screw in type.
To unscrew these. insert the chuck key as normal but instead of turning it, hit it sharply with a hammer in the direction the drill normally turns.
The chuck will then usually unscrew.

Sorry john, meant anti-clockwise! (as you'd be tightening it further)
