does anyone think you would be able to get a chainsaw through on to your luggage for a flight? not the carry on luggage, the other one that is checked in. I am asking from a security point of view. I did bring on about 8 years ago from the US to Ireland and while the lugagge was opened, it came through ok.
edit: i have just checked ryanair and they do not allow chainsaws

I think Stihl and others make "lugage cases" hard plastic cases for their saws. I'd sa that a properl packaged saw in a hard case, and with all its fluids drained, perhpas chain and bar removed would be fine.
    but I am guessing

I've brought golf clubs, firearms and bikes (not at the same time) through checked luggage.

Call the airline first to make sure and make sure you have a hard case.

Check the carrier's website and call them if necessary to clarify. I think most carriers prohibit anything with an internal combustion engine. It may be possible if disassembled as much as possible and fuel tank completely drained, then all you're carrying is some components.

I was on a flight in the USA when someone brought a chainsaw and put it in the overhead rack. Obviously this was before 9/11 but it was certainly interesting, to say the least, particularly with the smell of oil.
