    Hi folks.

Ive been looking at motors for the last month or two and what I had in mind does not seem to match with my budget so Ive increased it.

I'm looking for suggestions for cars, 5 door (hatch ideally but open to suggestions), no bigger than 1.4l, budget €7000 to €9000, maybe a wee bit more for something really nice.

I tested a 2010 1.4 Astra this morning and liked it but have read mixed reviews, also tested a 2009 Punto, didnt like it at all.

Wouldnt be doing huge mileage (prolly max 10,000 MPA) and would be doing long journeys approx once a month.

Reliability and comfort are king, not particularly worried about speeds and the like, as I said, I wouldnt be doing huge mileage.

    Any and all suggestions welcome.

    =)

Why no bigger than 1.4? Is it insurance reasons? Or fuel consumption?

Remember any car 2008 and newer is not taxed based on engine size but on co2 emissions.

My friend got herself a 1.4 golf 09 recently, 570 to tax and a pig on fuel in addition to being brutally slow due to the weight.

    Both tbh!

I'm just looking for something that will do as a runaround more then anything, speed isn't a priority, I wouldn't completely rule out a 1.6 diesel though as the insurance prices are similar.

If you were going the diesel road a 1.5dci Renault Megane hatchback 2009/2010 would be an ideal car for you. The 09/10 euro 4 engine ones didn't have a dpf only 2011 onwards did so that wouldn't be an issue. They are good enough on diesel late 40s early 50s mpg on any kind of a run. Cheap tax €200. They are a great A to B car very comfortable and reliable I had a 2011 for 13 months I only recently traded it in I think the dealer still have it.

You would get one from a main Renault dealer with a warranty for your budget. Go for dynamique model and you get electric Windows, alloys, cruise control, Bluetooth. They really are a very under rated car. The main reason I got rid of mine was I wanted a saloon with a bit more power.

Many thanks for the comprehensive advice, I'd not considered a Renault, I will look it up.

It's the mk3 you want which were 2009 onwards. The mk2 had reliability issues but the mk3 was a completely different car as reliable as any of the competition.
