    Hi guys,

My bro has just arrived after a 4 hour drive and was saying that his Focus has started making a hissing noise. We went for a quick spin and when the car hits 30mph/turbo kicks in you can hear it. It's not a harsh hissing but more like air passing through something, if that makes sense.

All the auto factors/mechanics in the area are closed today for the long weekend so was hoping one of you folks would have an idea.

    Thanks,

    C

Sounds like a split in one of the turbo pipes or hole in the intercooler. Have him pop the bonnet and rev the engine to see if it's anything you can do a temporary bodge on

It's probably the flexible pipe bringing air from the the turbo to the intercooler, it's in the left hand side of the engine bay when facing the car ,near the bulkhead . If I can remember correctly about €40 from the main dealer

Usually this hose gets a tiny slit and starts leaking boost:

Thanks lads, couldn't find a leak but it definitely sounds like it's coming from a small hole in the piping. He's driving back home today (about 200 miles) so hopefully it'll hold out until he can get to a mechanic.

    Appreciate the info.

He'll have no problem driving it back for sure! Even if the pipe falls off, he will hear a big woosh and the car will be accelerate much much slower but he will be able to get home no problem!

A 1.8 TDCI will go into limp mode after about 30 seconds of clouds of black smoke and then inject less fuel making hardly any smoke :P
