The Halo is going to be introduced into F1 in 2018. I would like to know peoples thoughts on it and whether it should be in F1 for next season or should the idea of the halo be scrapped completely.

For anyone who hasn't seen the halo, here it is.

But the biggest issues is that it wont filter down to the lower series unlike safety gear like HANS so whats the point of it? Knee jerk reaction

This is the main problem here. I think Horner said as much during the German Grand Prix.

They said it is coming in during 2018 but they're using the next year and a bit to test and research the concept more. We all know in formula 1 how much rules and regulations change (even the qualifying system and radio communications during this season) so I wouldn't be surprised at all if there's a major change regarding the halo and its implementation. We won't know much more though until later down the line and closer to the 2018 season.

I used to follow F1 passionately in the 90s but casually looking in on what's been happening it looks like the FIA have over regulated it and it just doesn't hold any appeal for me.

Cars are technically and visually boring, 1.6 litre engines are not very F1, did I read that cars are no longer allowed to be refueled during the race? The power boots thing.... I can't remember the name of it.

Or is it all a good thing and I'm just being a dinosaur?

Well if you want to nickpick but there were plenty of smaller 1.6 engines back in the day. Refuelling also lead to complete snoozefest races back in the day too.

With refueling: Watching the Classic races on SkyF1, there seems to be a free-for-all for the first 3 or 4 seasons but, by the late 90's, every team has it pretty figured out when it comes to pit stops leading to the tedium of synchronized pit stops by the early 2000's when the entire field came in at the same time every race.

Wasn't it BMW that took a 1.6 litre engine out of their production road cars bolted a turbo to it and invented the turbo era?

I think Lotus played around with some sort of turbo in the early 70's but it was Renault who brought it properly to F1 in the late 70's and stuck with it until it became reliable in the early 80's. BMW stole the march on them though in 83 with the engine you're talking about in the Brabham BT 52. That was the 1st turbo to win a championship.

That engine whooped everything at the time didn't it? It goes to show how little there was between roadcars and F1 cars when you could take a production engine and win an F1 championship with it. Or at least it goes to show how little the sport knew, they were making all sorts of breakthroughs and discoveries. That opportunity for innovation just doesn't exist anymore.

I don't think it's totally down to regulations, or even mostly down to regulations. Engineers just know too much these days. Back when that BMW engine was made guys were still working out of garages and had little to no electronics. That type of innovation isn't there anymore because they've made all those easy macro inovations. Now it's highly advanced innovation in materials that require labs to carry out.

We're just not living in the same world as those people.

It was mental fast for the time but still unreliable. Piquet had a load of retirements but still took the wdc with I think 4 wins. The year before Rosberg won it with just 1 win!!

The rules were definitely more lax with FISA plugging holes and banning big concepts regularly in the 70's and 80's. The innovation was constant though and, as you say, these days it's all been thought of. The ground effects era was fascinating. The pinnacle would have been the Lotus 88, I reckon, but it got banned before it got the chance to race.
