Hi does anyone know if it's still ok to visit the grounds of ashford castle ? We we're there in 2008 and paid €5 each. I have a friend staying with us at the moment and would like to bring her there. How much is it to get in now? I saw on some posts that there's a back access where you don't need to pay to get in is this still open if so would appreciate for direction?

    Thanks

    Hi,

yes it is. Park at the church and walk into the grounds that way

Yes, you can park at church/abbey - either walk through the abbey or turn right just after the church, the path will lead you by the "monks' fishing house" and across the river, then you have some choices in the route to take. See http://www.mayowalks.ie/media/Media,10960,en.pdf.

The most direct route from the car park to Ashford Castle would be to continue up the avenue but you will end up on the wrong side of the river and be faced with a gentleman in livery on the bridge - it depends on how convincing you are in your approach whether he will allow you to cross the bridge without a ticket (think they can be bought in the coffee shop).

So go for a nice walk in the woods instead and approach from the other side.
