LE MANS - ROLEX EXPLORER II 1655

usually opted for the Rolex 'Explorer II 1655'
But for his iconic role in Le Mans, the 'King of Cool' chose to wear a blue-faced, black strapped 'Heuer Monaco'

So whats the Rolex got to do with the film? I presume the Author just likes Rolex over Heuer

He didn't so much chose to wear the Heuer either. He was going to wear his Hanhart or Omega or Rolex, but figured Omega/Rolex would make hay with the association so when his prop master - in the pay of one Jack Heuer, desperate to break the US market - suggested the Heuer and pointed out the racing drivers wore it he strapped it on.

Heuer couldn't get arrested in the US(neither could Rolex until the mid 60's) and the McQueen halo didn't do much in the end. The LeMans film was a flop and has only become "iconic" after the fact(even so few enough have suffered through it). What finally got Heuer some traction in the US market was selling cheaper models on the back of tokens given away with packs of cigarettes.

Then Heuer made hay with the McQueen and have done ever since. McQueen would probably not have liked this one bit. Indeed he "had words" with said prop master who was handing out watches to crew. The chronograph he actually wore the most was a German made Hanhart of the type WW2 Luftwaffe pilots wore.

The one he wore seems to have been a very rare type. Certainly rarer than original Heuer Monacos. Made for the French military post WW2 as part of reparations and only made for a year and a run of two hundred IIRC.

Funny thing about McQueen, he wears time only watches on his left wrist, but chronographs on the right. I've seen other guys in old photos doing similar. An effort to protect the pushers maybe?
