staying focused in a data entry job... Dying of boredom

I've just started a job which I was promised in the interview would be something really interesting , but now I'm in it turns out I was essentially lied to and it's a data entry job. I'm bored out of my mind copy pasting the exact same stuff all day. On the one hand I could deal with all that (the people are nice and it's a convenient commute), but my manager is really unpleasant. I'm finding it really hard to be accurate and not make spelling errors (I'm copying weird strings of letters and numbers as opposed to words) because I'm so bored I keep losing my train of thought. Any advice as to how I can be more accurate and get my manager off my case?

I feel your pain. I have a similar highly repetitive job. Half my colleagues spend the whole day being affronted by how boring the job is and it does nothing only cause personal angst.

I suggest that if you're going to stick to the job for now, you need to commit and try different methods of systemising your approach to work. Clearly, it's not a natural environment so you just have to keep adapting your work methods every time you make a mistake until you crack it. I find that doing things in a certain sequence allows you to make a point of really concentrating at certain points and relaxing at other points. Sometimes, trying to find a way of doing things in an optimum order is the key.

In a nutshell, try to keep the negative thoughts to a minimum and try and get the job to work for you. Take what you need from jobs like these because a lot of these organisations are set up to take what they can from you so play the game right back. Leave when it's time on good terms and on your terms.

If the job was not what you were promised then you could stay for a minimum of 3-6 months, get the reference and then start looking for other work.

In these types of jobs it's important to take regular breaks, designated and other wise in order not to get deflated and get eye strain. Go to bed early the night before. Set up a system whereby you can quickly check over bits of work to make sure you have entered in the data correctly.
