You couldn't be much more vague there tbh, also no mention of budget.

There are currently 4092 1.4-2.0 petrol, 2007-2016 cars listed on Carzone.

So those being the criteria, I'd go with this or this for something large.

Or one of these, or these or one of these for something smaller

    :D

I would not have a specific budget but let's say < 3500 euros
Avoiding very recent or highly priced cars
I am looking to know which is the best car with the above criteria (Toyota, Nissan, Ford, Opel, Skoda etc)

Less than 3500 family sized 2008 onwards with average mileage your choice is limited and they won't be the best in range either with and will have highish tax . Opel or Peugeot or hyundai are your choices I'd say

I don't want to buy a car which is well known for common defects in the used car market.
Definitely will have the car inspected by professional mechanic
I am just curious what is the kind of car that would be best to buy with these criteria

I have my eyes now on Opel Zafira - Hyundai Matrix - Nissan Almera ...
Are these reliable cars? especially Almera (getting mixed reviews on this one)

Almeras aren't especially reliable, they're also pretty unpleasant.
For cheap reliable petrol cars, I'd look at a 1.6 Avensis. You won't get an 08 within budget though, but that's not that important anyway.

No need to be 08 mad if going for a petrol.
I would go 07 and go for a nice spec avensis 1.8.Great car .

    Thanks for the recommendation
I ended up with 2003 Toyota Avensis and I am so happy with my purchase.
I am so grateful for your advice and guidance :D
