    Hi all,

I going to buy a new car but really have no clue what to get

Im currently driving a 1.0 3 door opel corsa and have €8,000 plus my own car.

First off, i want a 5 door anyway and will go up to 2.0Diesel or 1.6 petrol.

I was thinking of the Insignia but Everyone is saying stay away from them because of problems but cant actually tell me any problems.

Would I get a passat CC for that money?

What cars should I be looking at? I'm looking for a bigger car now obv. any suggestions.

How old is your corsa? Also what kimd of driving do you need it for? That will determine whether to go diesel or petrol.

Doubt you'll get a Passat cc but you'd probably get a standard 09-10 diesel Passat for that kind of money, possibly newer depending on your trade in. I have a 2010 one of these, good economy and nice car to drive.

    Not much driving.
Ive do about 12000 KM a year so 8000miles or there abouts
I live 20 min from work and only drive in cork city
my corsa is 11 years old.2005 model. I only need a car for driving to work and standard stuff.
    no long distances at all.

I wouldn't buy a diesel doing that kind of driving. There's not a huge choice of petrols in bigger cars post 08. Have a look at the 1.4 petrol Passat 09-10. Should be within budget. A family member of mine has had one since new with no issues at all.

Wally if you generally drive in cork city and are keeping to a budget I would go for the astra/golf/focus type of car, you will get either a better spec or a younger car or probably both in the same price range as an insignia/passat/mondeo.

It makes me laugh the amount of times i see that comment here 'i wouldn't buy a diesel with that mileage'....utter rubbish. The country is flooded with 1.6 diesel motors doing city mileage and where's the catastrophic dpf and related issues that supposedly occur with heinous low mileage diesels? Seriously, cop on folks....if that was such an issue then where are all the petrol engines? 80% cars are diesel and many low mileage.

Corolla 1.4,D4D would be your best buy...there's more poke in those than an Audi A4...change the oil and filter, fuel filters regularly and you'll be happy out.

    I've one since

They can and do give issues with low mileage and they are not a cheap fix. You could easily wipe out 2-3 years fuel savings (if there even is any) with a dpf issue, and that's just one of the things that can go wrong.

You are correct that the cities are flooded with diesels but are people actually saving money with them? I seriously doubt it. It's the typical pub talk mentality, diesel is the 'way to go' no matter what your driving needs are.

People buy them because diesels can be cheaper to tax and the choice in petrol cars has dwindled since 2008. People will happily spend thousand extra just to save a few hundred in motor tax. They also buy them because Mary down in the pub bought one and says she is getting 100mpg from it. Just because something's popular doesn't make it suitable for everyone, it's just a standard herd mentality.

Also how is someone doing 8000 miles a year, mostly of short/stop city driving going to benefit from a diesel car? Diesel cars only become frugal the more you drive them. They take longer to warm up so with constant short stop/start journeys they ain't going to be any more economical. And I talk from experience of this rather than wild internet hysteria. When I have to drive my car around town the mpg drops right down making it no better than a petrol car.
