Social welfare and partner's pay

    Hello.
My girlfriend and I are expecting! Over the next few months we'll be moving in together and as I make 750 after tax a week and she's on social Welfare (she has a kid from a previous relationship so she's already receiving child support and rent allowance) I was wondering if anyone on here could answer a few questions for me? I work full time and she works 3 short days a week. (12 hours a week)
    1) will she still be able to receive her payments if we live together?
    2) will the social welfare completely stop her payments?
    3) what options are out there?

Not sure what category to put this into couldn't really find anything else.
    Tia

Mod Note: Uh, I'm not really sure why you chose the Weddings forum for your question, but I have moved it to the appropriate State Benefits forum.

Congratulations on your imminent happy event.

Sometimes you just have to bite the bullet.

If either partner is in full time employment, then Rent Allowance is gone.

Most SW payments (if means tested) would be gone based on your own earnings.(this is where I'm assuming she's on some sort of SW payment).

Your best bet is to call into local Citizens Information office - they're not really the oracle, but they'll know more than I do. THe only people who can give a definitive answer are SW themselves . WWW.WELFARE.IE is good, but requires perseverance.

Good luck to all of you. With your 750+ and her income from p/t work, you'll make it.

    Nick

Forgot to mention she'll be leaving work completely when our baby is here. At least for a year anyway.

What payment does she get? If it's lone parent then it will stop as shew no longer a lone parent.

Citizens advice night be your best bet.

Ya shes getting the loan parent payment. But as the first kid isn't mine I wonder would she still be able to receive anything at all? I'll have to call into social welfare or citizens information soon. Thansk

She's not a lone parent if she's cohabiting.

The father of her first child should be supporting his child.

You will get nothing apart from children's allowance

Can do without the rent allowance tbh. Children's allowance would be a plus though seeing as she won't be able to go to work. Cheers

She will still get child benefit that's a universal payment and not means tested ,
    Unlike JSA and Rent supplement

A man on 750 a week should be able to support his family

I took it as your partner was receiving lone parent payment and rent allowance only in your op.

Here is a link to citizen advice on rules for one parent payment might clear some things up for you.

My daughter was in this exact situation, She will not get lone parent if cohabiting. She wont get rent allowance either.

I can do it but rent in Dublin is expensive and a little extra cash flowing in would be a bonus

What did she do? Did SW assist in any way?

Child allowance was all she was entitled to. That was it.

That's really neither here nor there. He asked about entitlements and has a right to the information. If you've nothing helpful to add you should move on instead of judging other people and their income because it's more than you had.

OP, children's allowance will be all your GF is entitled to, but she would receive maternity payments for nearly 6 months too. But you should still speak to citizens info or SW just to be sure.

Ya shes getting maternity payments but you know after that ends we'll have to work around with what we have... thanks for the support

You know everyone with a child gets this? It's called child benefit and is a monthly payment.

    Hi kmccarthy247,

Just to add to the comments...

Have you reviewed the Back to Work Family Dividend from DSP. You will find information about it on citizensinformation.ie

The Back to Work Family Dividend (BTWFD) scheme aims to help families to move from social welfare into employment. It gives financial support to people with qualified children who are in or take up employment or self-employment and as a result stop claiming a jobseeker's payment or a one-parent family payment on or after 5 January 2015.

    Worth a look...

    Regards,
