Thanks for this. Tuned in here in NI. Hoping it's not going to be encrypted as RTE1HD was soon after it went on air here for NI viewers via Sky.

So nothing to do with TG4, it's all Sky's fault ?

TG 4 HD launches today on Sky.

104 in ROI (281 for non HD subscribers)
163 in NI (281 for non HD subscribers)

    http://helpforum.sky.com/t5/Entertainment/Upcoming-changes-to-Sky-Channels/td-p/2407614

So, NI viewers get RTÉ 2 and TG4 in HD, but not RTÉ 1???

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,067 ✭✭✭✭fryup

Are you sure? ..... or is it just decrypted without HD sub?

While I know that 'In the clear' means it clears on Northern Ireland viewing cards I can see how it can cause confusion for some people.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,076 ✭✭✭Digifriendly

My own take on this is that TG4 because it is clearly advocated as being made available for the whole of Ireland in the GFA (promotion of Irish language) is being allowed to broadcast in HD in NI via Sky unencrypted. On the other hand RTE1HD is encrypted even to those with HD subscription.

    Hi Digifriendly,

Just trying to understand what you are say.

Is TG4 HD available to people in the North free to view (with a Sky NI box and Sky registered viewing card) without paying a subscription?

Or would a viewer living in the North have to subscribe to Sky, any package for the privilege of watching TG4 HD?

    Thankyou

Maybe I am misunderstanding the terminology, but as I understand it

'in the clear' = FTA = no encryption or impediment to viewing the channel; no card required.

FTV = only viewable with a suitable decryption card, but no current subscription required.

    Your understanding is correct.

Its incorrect to say TG4 HD is in the clear. Its Not. It just decrypts without a HD sub. It still requires a sky basic subscription.

    My understanding also.

However I just want clarification on
    "Sky unencrypted"

I'm unsure from the above post's as to how TG4 HD is being viewed in the North.

    Thanks for making that "clear"

It still requires a Sky subscription to view TG4 HD.

I believe it is purely a profit based decision taking by TG4 to have its HD channel carried on Sky.

If it is the case it would be very unfair for people living on the Island who cannot afford a payment to Sky.

What would be fair to all the people of this Island, would be that TG4 HD was broadcasted in the "clear" FTA on both Saorview, Freeview NI and Saorsat.
I believe this would honour the GFA agreement and also the people who fund the TG4 channel through the payment of a TV licence.

Unfortunately TG4 have not done this.

Sadly people who now fund TG4 through a tv licence are only having the option of watching a second class TG4 free to air.

Sorry for any confusion caused by the incorrect terminology I used. To be clear, those with a Sky subscription in NI receive TG4 HD in addition to those with HD subscription.
You are absolutely right Friendo re TG4. Both S4C and BBC Alba are FTA and so should TG4 and it should also be HD on Saorview as its HD via cable and satellite

TG4 have tweeted that they are looking at launching TG4 HD on Saorview as soon as possible. Whether they really are or that's just a fob off remains to be seen. If TG 4 HD launches on Saorview and the only one left is TV 3 in crappy SD then surely it would push them to get TV 3 HD on Saorview too?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,841 ✭✭✭lertsnim

If TG4 HD did launch then it would be cheaper for TV3.

    Sounds promising!

I wish that Saorview could be changed to offer ONLY HD space to prospective broadcasters, with the option of a supplementary SD channel. No HD channel => won't carry.
