It will be pricy. No way around it.

Magnet pay €100 to have you connected, that has to be recouped in a setup fee. Virgin charge 20+50 then 50/mo.

If you need a temporary connection go midband.

Yes its good to see a bit of innovation in respect of contract lengths and its good for people who are mobile. Hopefully other companies will respond too.

They also seem to have moved away from 18 month contracts.

And moved away from silly generous new customer discounts that annoy everyone else :)

If you don't need a large download allowance, Meteor mobile broadband would be worth considering especially if are in Meteor 4G coverage. They currently have a 65GB/month package for €30/month on a 6 month contract and the upfront cost is €99 for their Huawei B315 router.

If you are moving somewhere else in Ireland after the 6 month period, you can take it with you and that way you can continue using it at your next location and just update the billing address.

Their 4G speeds are consistently quick (like Vodafone 4G) in many areas such as the following example just outside Donegal town (Saturday 7:30pm):

Even at home where I just get 3G on Meteor, it's consistently between 10Mbps and 14Mbps even through the evening, plenty for full HD streaming on YouTube.

There is no actual landline involved with VM - just forget the phone aspect thats what a lot of people do.

It's not a land line really.

I'm not entirely sure why make it more expensive to not to have it.

Costs them X to provide you with BB or BB + Phone. No extra expense to register an extra number for you. If the phone is there, you might just use it. If its not, you definitely won't. So nudging you to accept the phone opens up a potential top up to your monthly tariff. Win win.

it also drives up subscriber numbers.

Neither Eir nor VM have anything to lose providing a landline service, the former is classic PSTN the latter is a closed VoIP solution over PacketCable.

A second for 'midband' if you don't need a connection longer than a year, do shop around though and remember that just because a service seems inexpensive or has a generous data cap does not mean it's going to be great in your area. The catch with mobile internet is contention at the nearest BTS.

    I think we know that.

Fact is a lot of people don't want the vm phone offering. But you order it without it. Unless you want to pay more. Which makes no sense.
