So some begrudging so & so decided to report me to the revenue. To keep it short, I have done nothing wrong, complaint was made out of malice. I'll be replying to the revenue in writing but what happens after that? I have no experience with this, like I said done nothing wrong, have nothing to hide but still slightly nervy - how drawn out could this process be?

What was the response from Revenue? Did they write to you or visit you? All reports of suspected tax evasion must be followed up in some way by Revenue.

How do you know someone reported you? Revenue will certainly not have told you this is the reason for an enquiry.

What did Revenue's contact with you say - it's impossible to give you a meaningful response without knowing what type of enquiry it is, what tax types are involved, what kind of timeframe etc...

Got a letter out of the blue saying to reply in writing by X date. Obviously I'll be responding to say they've been misinformed.

Revenue can review anyone's tax position at any time without someone reporting them. If you don't want to elaborate on the contents of the letter, fair enough. However, you must address the queries raised in the letter.

Do we take it you are renting out a room or a house?
There are income / taxation guidelines for both.
Are you in breach of any of them?

Fair enough so, like I said I have zero experience here. So was just a little worried to get the letter. As I said in the previous post its rental income review however neither I nor my wife have ever had an income from rent. The letter did mention that they received information, that's why assumed it was reported.

So are you saying then that you didn't have rental income, but they seem to think you do?

Reviews of rental income are one of the most common types of compliance intervention Revenue undertake, so I wouldn't be jumping to the conclusion that someone has reported you.

    Correct.

Thanks for the info. The letter did say they received information so I assumed it was reported

Revenue receive an array of 3rd party information as a matter of course, from other state agencies and local authorities - on NPPR, LPT, PRTB registrations...

If you and / or your wife had multiple properties simultaneously at any point, it's possible that it seems likely that 1 was rented.

Like I said, neither of us ever had any income from property rent, not even a room on our house. I'm just wondering if these things get wrapped up quickly or are they drawn out?

You may not have rental income but if you had a second property, like a holiday home, revenue may have got this information from NPPR or LPT.
The length of time depends on how quickly their questions are resolved. If there is no other income then it should get wrapped up very quickly, if you think that the query is being dragged out you can complain under their code of practice.

Banks , LPT, PRTB, etc are all avenues that the revenue use to gather data. Do you or your wife have an interest in another property?

Revenue will occasionally use a phrase like "Information available to Revenue indicates that ...etc etc". That could mean absolutely anything and I would say the vast majority of the information is not from informants.

Also, not all information from informants is actually followed up. An awful lot of letters are sent that are motivated out of malice or revenge over something and include exaggerations, half-truths, guesses and mistakes. Revenue would waste an almighty amount of resources following up on all of them. They have to look at all such letters etc with a jaundiced eye and follow up whatever looks like a worthwhile lead, but not the rest.
