What's happening with these trees?

Anyone know what's going on with these trees? What species are they? Looks like growths of some kind of overwhelming them. There's four of them in the garden that are the same.

The leaves are very sparse still, I would imagine they should be fully out by now.

I think its a fruit, possibly an apple, possibly a crab apple, usually used in a more ornamental setting. Looks like lots of fruiting spurs on the branches.

The lichen growing all over the tree would not usually impact on the tree, the damage being aesthetic only, and is usually indicative of a damp or badly ventilated environment.

The leaves look like they are drying out, rather than a disease (but also difficult to tell from photos) perhaps the recent dry spell has been too much for it.

Looking at its site I would say the mad mower has also been banging into the base of the tree in his eternal quest to ringbark the tree :D damaging the trees function, perhaps also leading to the drying out.

That tree is suffering from huge water stress.
That tight grass sward is depriving it of water. Either spray the grass for 1.5m around with glyphosate, or put down some black plastic on the grass to kill it, and keep that area grass free.
