Saw this online earlier... Maybe it is a case of jumping before being pushed?

"I have decided to leave 2FM after 10 great years. 2FM is moving one way and I'm moving the other. I need a new challenge, a new mountain to climb. The last year on weekends has afforded me the time to write a book (more details soon) and conceive and write a number of radio and TV projects.
I wish the new 2FM team all the best success in the future, I just need to stop playing Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez. This weekend Saturday and Sunday 7am-9am will be my last shows on 2FM.
I started back 10 years ago with The Colm and Jim-Jim Breakfast Show, I provided the commentary on Gerry Ryan's funeral ( a real honour) and presented a talk show with Lucy Kennedy ( a real star), my own phone show and then DriveBy with Al Porter (watch his star rise!) For all the knocks RTE receives , let me tell you, it's an amazing place to work in filled with amazing creative people.
Leaving RTE is tinged with sadness but I've been in this business long before George Michael formed Wham! So I am a realist.
Where to next.....Who knows! Radio has afforded we an amazing life. I have fulfilled so many ambitions but I still have a few left...now is the time to pursue them.
P.s Best of luck to the new DG Dee Forbes, I never got a chance to meet her."

I wonder where he will end up...? JNLRs out this Wednesday... Maybe some vacancies will arise.

He's been long past his sell by date on 2fm "the national youth station" (lol), but he's not the only one to be fair.

As for "Commentating on a funeral" for a radio host? Only in Ireland. He wasn't the president FFS.

Apparently all 2fm weekend contracts are coming to an end in the coming weeks and only larry is to survive

Definite whiff of bitterness off that. Unsurprisingly it sounds like he wasn't happy at all with the schedule changes and he wasn't expecting to be kept on much longer - so he's jumped.

He's a contractor, why his contract was renewed for so long is the bigger surprise.

Al Porter is the favourite to replace him according to the indo. I'd actually prefer Hayes - and I hate Hayes.

Would anyone know did Colm Hayes add many/any listeners to any 2FM slots he was on during the ten year stint?

    Including Will Leahy 😨

Reading the thread title...the fact that he is leaving 2FM... it is like reading news from 2010...You would forget that he has been on 2fm for the last 5/6 years.

    My feeling anyway.

The shows he was on (from memory, so forgive any omissions):

    - Breakfast with Jim Jim: I didn't follow the ratings at this time, I'd be interested to know how it did.
    - Mid-morning replacement for Gerry Ryan: AFAIR, the listenership tanked. I wouldn't necessarily blame Hayes for this as Ryan had a very loyal listenership.
    - Lunchtime show when Tubridy arrived and Hayes moved to 11am: Not sure.
    - Drivetime: I believe his figures dipped initially after replacing Leahy, but then began to improve. I could be wrong, but I don't think he ever surpassed Leahy.
    - Weekend: Dunno.

Obviously that's all just my recollection, I'm more than open to correction on these.

That's it. He's technically been on Weekend breakfast since getting moved off Drive - I say "technically" because more often than not he's on one of his extended holidays and one of those generic young lads is in his place. I'd be amazed if he was on-air for more than half of his scheduled weekend shows.

I believe Colm Hayes would be a good fit for Radio Nova. He would be comfortable with the music and he knows a lot of people there.

Has he done any radio work since leaving 2fm ?

Until last week, I had not considered this possibility. I wonder could he turn up on Today FM in the new year. Perhaps a mid-morning show with a mixture of music and light chat? What do you think??

Colm would know Ian Dempsey of course and, indeed, Hector. He probably knows Phil Cawley, too.

It would be lunacy of the highest order to give him a slot on Today FM. He has proven himself not capable of building a national audience in almost a decade's worth of work on 2FM.

If he was unable to maintain Gerry Ryan's audience, why would Today FM think he could reclaim Ray D'Arcy's?

I don't know. I just threw it out as a possibility, particularly if they had not intended for Anton Savage to leave and they are looking around to see who could fill the void.... maybe panicking!

Perhaps, my first thought would be more plausible - Radio Nova. He definitely knows a number of people associated with it and I believe he would be fine with the music mix. For that matter, 4FM might also suit him: maybe replacing Niall Boylan's lunchtime spot with a more mixed kind of program.

Unless Communicorp are in the business of driving Today FM into the ground they won't take on Colm Hayes.

He will be standing in for John Clarke for the next 3 weeks on Nova

Tbh, I can't see many more of the "old guard" getting shows on national radio. They're increasingly showing up on lesser stations. It's the start of the slide towards the dumper.

The very first photograph I ever saw of the original Radio Nova was of Colm in the studio.
That was 35 years ago :-0

LEGENDARY BROADCASTER COLM HAYES RETURNS TO RADIO

It’s been a while (well not that long)! Colm Hayes finished on RTÉ 2FM at the end of July and since then the Dublin broadcaster has been missing on radio. He's has been working on numerous projects and has just completed his first novel, a crime fiction thriller.

Now, Colm is set to return to radio, where he will guest present ‘John Clarke’s Biggest Jukebox’ on Radio NOVA for the next 3 Sundays.

One phone call from Dublin’s seriously addictive music station Radio Nova and Colm was dusting down his headphones, he says.

"It was going to take something special for me to return to radio and Nova is that something special", says Colm. "I’m a big fan of the station. The music they play is a cut above anything on any other radio station. John Clarke has given me the codes to his jukebox and the keys to his '65 Chevy so enjoy the ride Dublin”.

Kevin Branigan, Radio Nova’s CEO is delighted that Colm accepted his offer “I’ve long been an admirer of Colm’s presenting style, sense of humour – and, in particular, his audience numbers over the years! We’re delighted that Colm’s coming in to us and we’re looking forward to his return to the Dublin airwaves on Nova!”.

Colm has promised to keep up the great music that’s standard fare for Nova and was spotted earlier today loading up the Jukebox with The Rolling Stones, Thin Lizzy, David Bowie and The Beatles to name but a few. Colm can be heard on Radio Nova 100.3 from 10am-2pm every Sunday until 1st January, with ‘The Biggest Jukebox’, four hours of great rock and roll classics.

Radio NOVA broadcasts to Dublin, Kildare, Meath & Wicklow on 100.3FM and is available nationally via the Irish Radio Player and the NOVA Smartphone app.
