The motor check says is 161bhp is this a sign it's the older engine ?

Check the engine code number. Should have M47xxxx or N47xxxx in it.

    N47 engine is 177bhp. M47 is 163bhp.

    Actually M47 is 161bhp, there was a N47 version in 320d with 163bhp (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BMW_N47#163_bhp_version)

Ok if want to be 100% accurate but the OP is talking about a 5 Series not a 3 Series. And most are described as 163bhp on the car's registration cert despite what wikipedia states.

Is this in log book? Thanks

There is a slight difference between metric and mechanical hoursepower though...

163 metric horsepower (PS) is 161 mechanical horsepower (bhp) - and that's where the confusion comes from probably... :)

Try and get an lci version, they have some upgrades such as led rear lights etc and some internal features over the older version, it came out in Mar 2007 and the m47 was still in them till sept 2007

If you buy a 520d make sure you get a tracker fitted and have full comp. Insurance, these cars are one of the easiest cars on the market to steal!! I'm speaking from experience!!!
