Aer Lingus and CityJet list a driving licence as an acceptable form of ID for travel to the UK.

    Is a learner Permit acceptable?

    Thanks!

Aer Lingus will accept virtually anything with your photo on it ......
    • Valid passport
    • Driver’s licence with photo
    • International student card
    • National ID card/government issued photo ID cards
    • Health insurance cards with photo/social security cards with photo
    • Bus pass with photo
    • Work ID with photo

City Jet will accept any 'valid Government issued photo id' which clearly includes a learner permit...

Valid driving license with photograph, Irish passport card, valid government issued photo ID card.

I think the idea is that the learner's permit is an official government photo ID. Which is really what they want in the first place; you'll be fine.

+1 When you get to the boarding gate, the purpose of producing ID for a flight to the UK is to show that you are the person who's name is on the boarding pass, that's all. It's nothing to do with immigration and (to answer the OP's original question) they don't care if you've passed the driving test or not!

Ryanair claim it's all about security which is BS, they introduced the requirement to show ID at the gate to stop people giving their ticket to a friend when they discovered that they couldn't travel because at the time (before 9/11) you could fly to the UK with Aer Lingus without showing any ID whatsoever.

Even now, Aer Lingus in Dublin will take virtually anything with your photo on it though most regular travellers bring their passport or driving licence as when you're coming home, Sharon in her hi-viz vest in East Midlands (or any similar) airport can get a bit stroppy if you show her some scratched and worn employee id badge!
