Can I request community service instead of a fine?

I was fined for a cycling offence last year around Christmas and due to a series of unfortunate events, I missed the deadline for paying it. I'm due in court soon.

I'm wondering if it's possible or reasonable to ask to do community service instead of paying?

I have the money and have no problem paying whatever the judge deems just. I am, however, a bit of an oddball and would actually like to do some community service. I think it would be a bit of craic and more productive than handing over a bit of cash.

    Thoughts?

IIRC community service can only be given as an alternative to prison by application of the probation act. I welcome correction there, again IIRC this area needs quite a bit of reform and updating.

Why not do some volunteering anyway?

It may be productive for you, but I'd hazard a guess those programmes are a huge drain on the state.

Trust me, you wouldn't like it. Just pay the fine and do some charity work.

It's the hanging around with real criminals that you won't like. I've cleaned brambles out of graveyards, distributed incontenence pads, cleaned graffiti.

The work's what it is, its the scumbags that spoil it.
