According to the eir web site customers can access their sports channels via a Sky card (without sub).
A friend has had an old card registered by eir and indeed can access sports channels. The available channels are said to be
    eir sport 1
    eir sport 2
    BT Sport 1 HD
    BT Sport 2 HD
    BT Sport Europe HD
    BT Sport ESPN HD
I have just been watching a bit of Rangers Vs Stranraer and had him record 10 secs for me to examine.
This is on BT Sports 1.
The recorded file is 720x576, so it seems he does not have the HD channel tuned (or selected maybe).
I would like to double check the tuned channels against a list of frequencies/PIDs/etc and maybe figure out what is not right.
    Thanks for any info ;)

The HD channel will have a HD on the DOG. Also it should be on EPG number 427

From what I can make out BT Sport 1, 2 & Europe (all HD) are on TP
    11385/V/29500 3/4
but all of those channels remain scrambled.
Is it possible that the STB he is using does not handle HD streams? The channels would hardly show as 'Scrambled' in that case I suspect.

It seems more likely to me that eir have not enabled the descrambling of the relevant TP. Always assuming I have the correct one located.

I would like confirmation from someone who has the eir sports channels that I have located the correct TP.

    Opinions?

My opinion is that its likely that because its a HD channel its locked down ie married to the Sky box as part of a premium package in line with Sky's NDS encryption policy for HD on 28.2E.

Is this a viewing card issued by EIR ? How would an old Sky card that is out of subscription work.

What type of box are you testing this on ? Is it an SD box (that wont work btw)?

The card was enabled by eir and it descrambles eir sports and BT Sports and Premier, but not the HD channels. Everything else is as expected.
It is an old Setanta FTV issued card and not married to any box that I am aware of.

If the box is SD then I would not expect the HD channels to show as scrambled like Sky Sports, but fail to display the HD channel.
So it seems that the HD TP is not enabled for descrambling on the card.

Is it a Sky HD box? If not then you will not get BT Sport in HD.

Thanks, I will have to check that out. I borrowed the card last night and will play with it today.
I went rooting this am and found a couple of old Sky boxes here, but neither has HDMI out so have not been able to check them yet.
If what you say is correct then these won't work either.

I don't understand how this Sky thing works ..... I though the decryption of the signal would be independent of the resolution of the video, and once decrypted it would not error as still encrypted.

    Anyway more tests to do.

I will have the defenitive answer later today. You cant mess with cards so save yourself grief. this is a pic of hd boxes
    https://duckduckgo.com/?q=sky+hd+boxes&iax=1&ia=images

The way the system works is eir make you register for eir sport after you have registered for my eir. You then enter your contact number for the setanta card, then the viewing card number and so on, then press continue and bingo you are registered. I did it with an old card and channels opened but used an SD box. I then went away and got my hands on a hd box but now you cant swop card, you have to ring eir/setanta and quote card number and get signal sent again. My mistake was I mixed up the 2 setanta cards, dont ask, so when I rang to get hd box activated I quoted wrong card number, they activated card ok but as this was for an SD sub no hd. I then tried online and got registered again but no signal sent. It said you can pair 5 cards but it does appear this can only be done online at first attempt. By the way I was told they now pair card with signal so dont need box ser no.

I am going to ring again today and find out once and for all.

I dug out a few boxes to test.

    1. Pace Sky Digibox

It would not decrypt the HD channels.

    2. Thomson Sky Box

It would not accept the card, apparently wanting its own card wherever that might be!

    3. Ferguson Ariva 120

It would not decrypt the HD channels. It has no problem displaying HD channels where they are FTA ... both Satellite and Terrestrial.

I am leaning to the view that the TP with the HD channels has not been enabled for decryption by this card. Of course I have no knowledge how Sky/eir/whoever manage such things so this is just guessing ;)

    @ swoofer:

I am registered and have the card working, and the card is not tied to any particular box.
The ONLY problem I have is that the HD channels do not appear to be enabled on the card.

I have not seen that I can register up to 5 cards .... that is interesting, as I have a second really old card here (one of the blue ones) and might try that one also. Do you have a link you could give me regarding multiple card registrations? Thanks.

I notice there is an 'aerial' connection on the Sky box, but it seems to do nothing with the signal .... no terrestrial channels available.
Is this just a convenient connection or something? The Sky box is not a combo in spite of this connection?
At least the Ariva provides both Sat & Terrestrial channels on its output.

Look, the transponder details of pay-TV channels are not a state secret, and there's no problem saying what they are. It's becoming abundantly clear though that the OP wants to find a way of "beating" Sky's system and getting BT Sport in HD on a non-Sky reciever.

As I said elsewhere, it appears to be a requirement of all VideoGuard licencees that third party boxes aren't licenced. That's their business; pay TV inevitably involves the use of proprietary conditional access systems; once they're beaten, then their useless with the attendant damage to the pay-TV company's business. Not all proprietary CAS' employ this particular requirement, mind you, but VideoGuard does.

That being the case, I'm going to close the thread at this point
    .
