Where to live on red luas line?

    Hi all,

I recently graduated from university and have gotten a job in the citywest area. I most likely will not have a car in Dublin and am looking at my options for renting accommodation (I'm from the west so do not know Dublin very well). It seems that living along the red luas line would be most convenient for getting to work, however I have been reading bad reports about anti-social behavior all along this line.

Is there anywhere along the line that would be a relatively safe location for a young female with other professionals living there also? Ideally, I would love to be within a 20-30 minute commute to work, but also close enough to town to head out at the weekends.

    Thanks in advance :)

Bear in mind the Luas stop for Citywest is not central and depending on where your offices are you could be a considerable walk away. You have bus options too.

Personally, I'd feel a bit cheated if I had to come to Dublin, work near the Luas and then use the bus. There is a lot of hype about anti social behaviour and the Red Line. There are apartments etc between Saggart and the Citywest shopping centre, all near the tram and close to the CityWest campus. A recent graduate (or a middle aged man like me) could walk any of it.

Honestly, you have a lot of options. Don't be afraid to explore the wider area yourself and don't take anyone's word for it. Google, a willingness to explore and your own initiative, are your friends.

Thanks for the replies!! I have been looking into some places in the Citywest/Saggart area and while they would be great for work, I am concerned that the area is a bit far from the city? I will probably spend most weekends in town. Would taxi's back out to citywest after nights out cost a lot?

Paid €25 to the hotel there from town before.

Anywhere near the Belgard and Kingswood stops are really nice places to live. These would be ideal for what you're looking for.

Avoid Fettercairn like the plague and everywhere from Bluebell all the way in to the Museum stop. Any further along that line (Smithfield to The Point) is fine if you want to live in the city.

I'm not too familiar with Citywest & Saggart areas, but haven't heard anything terrible either.

I have seen antisocial behaviour on the luas late at night, but only a handful of times.

This is a good site for estimating taxi fares...

Saggart to Temple Bar = €25.40 to €39.00 (depending on traffic).

Don't listen to this, its complete BS.

Don't think you're very familiar with the areas between Bluebell and Museum either but that didn't stop you...

Doesn't offend me (as I don't live anywhere near there) but there's loads of areas in Drimnagh, Inchicore, Rialto etc that are great places to live.

Inchicore is alright, but the other two are crawling with junkies and scumbags

As somebody who has lived in areas that became quite dodgy over time, I must say that there tends to be no smoke without fire. Somebody saw something there at least once to be mentioning it in that light. Doesn't mean that it happens often, but its important to mention. We all can be in the wrong place at wrong time.

Much the same way as you don't hear of such behavior on the Shrewsbury Road.

Yeah i mean yeah no smoke without fire people can mention things once and an area can get a name

OP, I'd highly recommend you take a look at Stoneybatter / Arbour Hill. It's a great spot with a village feel, loads of nice cafes / pubs etc. It's walking distance to town and very close to the red line at either Museum or Smithfield. You'd also be going against the commuter flow so wouldn't have to deal with such crammed trams as going in the other direction.

I have to concur that although they undoubtedly have fine parts and have lots of decent people living there, I'd rather not live in Rialto, Drimnagh, Inchicore, Bluebell, around Kylemore Road etc. You'd probably be fine, but the areas are pretty grim.

I'm not really familiar with the farther reaches of the red line so can't really comment on Tallaght etc.

    Kilmainham.

A few minutes walk to LUAS. Depending on where you locate to. Have a look at the map and where you are WRT Luas.

After that it would be Monastery Gate or Monastery Road in Clondalkin. That's one village that's hopping.

Sure why not take the risk OP? What's life without a little danger?

Stoneybatter, Smithfield, Kilmainham, Thomas Street. All short walks to a red line luas stop, and all pretty central to the city.

I work in Citywest, and live in Dublin 8, near Thomas Street. It's a 10min walk to the James' Street Luas stop for me. 30mins-ish on the luas to Citywest, and a 10minute walk to my office.

Just my 2cents, If you like the convenience and night life of the city, stay closer to town and commute out to work.

If I drive, it's 20mins in the morning, a bit more in the evening traffic depending.
    When I cycle, it's ~50mins in, ~45mins home.

So the hype about anti social behaviour on the Red Line was just that, then. Hype. Thanks for clarifying

Well people suggesting places to live to the OP are probably wasting their time given this is almost 9 months later. Many people don't bother looking at the dates on posts before replying.

    That was my point.

I wasn't commenting on the actual pros/cons of living along the line.
