    Hi all

I am lucky enough to have a very large converted attic space that i have made into a home office. The back wall is a gable wall and i was wondering if anyone has any ideas ? This is my personal pet project so nothing is out of the question - i was just going to get shelves etc put up for displaying stuff but im sure there are many better ideas ?

Probably to help you avoid going up in smoke or invalidating your house insurance :)

I would imagine that as the attic is already converted, there are no structural changes planned. Surely putting up shelves wouldn't invalidate house insurance?

In insurance terms what is deemed to be habitable? Thats the question that needs to be put in writing to the insurer for clarification.

Could you put up some pictures of the space you have?

It's kind of impossible for anyone to give you design ideas if we don't know what kind of a space you have or what you want in your home office..

I thought you would know why.

Is it a 3 storey or 2 storey house?
Is it regarded as habitable space:
the fact that it is already converted does not mean is was done right: start with priory hall and work forward or back.....

there seems to be a general consensus that ALL attic conversions are done incorrectly judging by the responses on this thread. I have a 3 storey house that is architect signed off with self closing fire doors etc. All i was looking for was ideas on how to furnish a gable wall

Mod - please close this thread as it has already lost its way

As per my suggestion above - try starting a new thread with photos of the space you have to work with. Don't get offended when people are just trying to make suggestions. I'd be willing to bet a fair amount of DIY attic conversion attempts in this country are would scare the bejaysus out of the fire regs guys.

Don't think there's a consensus that all attic conversions are "done incorrectly" on this thread. It was merely one poster pointing out the requirement for fire regs to be adhered to.

    Good luck with the decorating!

Home cinema seems like a great idea to me :)

Had you bothered to state that before now you would have gotten different responses.

But look, people are only trying to help and its certainly not the first or 101'st time I have seen on these forums where, what would appear to be a slightly OT post, all of a sudden becomes very relevant to the discussion and matters are highlighted that people were not aware of.

And we yet don't know what construction the gable is: is it dry lined or skimmed block, of PH TF or what.
We don't know if there is a window in it for fire escape purposes.
it it a vaulted gable or just 2.4 high flat ceiling
    etc
