Found it myself a few days ago.

Appears the military also took control of the tower.

Would would/could you do as a pilot? The guy who was asking to push back at his own discretion, did he mean that he'd simply hot-tail it out of there and take off without official approval?

It is legal to go on your own discretion, in the event of ATC failure etc and a few other reasons i cant think of at the moment. Self positioning though you take full repercussions if theres an accident.

Repercussions may have been a better option then the position they where in at the time with gunfire going on in the airport and no ATC Control

Not a position or decision you'd take lightly or one id like to make myself

Take off and be intercepted air possibly shot down, I'd say he was having an issue with his ground crew as well. He did get permission to push at one stage, I would have switched the radios off till I was pushed and ready for start and then at least have been in a position to start and taxi or hold if situation deteriorated further.
