Myself and my wife are going away in late sept to lanzarote for a few nights. Has anybody any experience monitoring flight prices and how they rise and fall. When would be the best time to purchase. We're on skyscanner and they're up and down daily. Don't want to wait too long and have the price skyrocket up. So basically, for people with experience, when is the best time to buy?
    Thanks

Haha this is top secret information and dependent on airline to airline. There is no magical way of knowing. It generally depends on availability aka if a flight departs in a month and has a ton of seats, it's more likely to be on sale and vice versa - but you don't know how full a flight is because even with seat plans - an awful lot of people don't pick their seat until check in.

Best advice is to book a price that you're comfortable with and don't look after, it'll just piss you off :).

It's gone from 350 yesterday to 303 today. Oh the gamble to hold off and see.

Only tip I have is to check One Way flights outbound and the same inbound. Sometimes you'd get a cheap outgoing flight with Ryanair, and a cheap return with Aer lingus..
They seem to have copped into this method but I did save a few weeks ago on flights to Spain (Flew out with Ryanair and back with Iberia).. Saved about 60€..

In case you've just been checking the skyscanners and kayaks, mentioning that Google have an engine for searching flights from Ireland now too.. seems to be the quickest of the lot imo..

Computer based algorithms define pricing and unless you know someone in Datalex (Irish company and world leaders in airline pricing) its really pot luck.

My own experience is that 6-8 weeks is the optimum time for best price. I also check dates within 3-4 weeks of the dates I'm looking at to see what potential prices could be available.

Also log in from different computers or clear your cache - airline programme can see what you searched before and its possible the systems can sense you want that destination and date and keep the better prices away from you - yes they can be that clever.

I seen this on skyscanners Facebook page a few months back and saved it. I don't know how accurate it is

I'm in the same boat op. On Monday I saw flights with Ryanair Dub-Gran Canaria for 148 return, today (Thurs) they are 319 return. Im raging I didnt book - but was waiting for boss to confirm time off for partner. Now we really want to.

Flights out were 74euro , then 86, 105,116, 137 and now 159. Thats one way. Im hoping for a miracle now :)

Similarly, Aer Lingus had a similar pattern, started at 75, then 84, 103, 113, 159 and now 184 (one way)

EDIT: Now Aerlingus 309.99 for the return journey!! and the flight out has been reduced to 123.99 (down from 184.99)

You may possibly save a few bob by flying from Shannon or Belfast too. Worth a look at least.

+1. Heading to Gran Canaria next month - outbound with Ryanair and inbound with Aer Lingus. Saved €60 by using two separate airlines.

Sometimes skyscanner dont show the cheaper one way flights unless you actually select one way.
When you choose return, the minute you select the outbound flight the prices for the return flights go up.
The only way around that is to selct one way and do separate searches
