I dont think theres to many going for this sort of work these days,
big out lay for training and to get licence , then you have to do CPC course every year after this.
now by long distance do you mean Europe (away from home 3/5 days a week)if so anywhere between €700/ 950 a week.
now ireland anywhere between €500/650 a week. (bus driver not sure about).
I do a Cpc course every year, i thing i noticed that not many young people are on the course because this job is not as popular as it use to be with cpc and cost of licence, but in saying that in 10 /15 years time there will be crying out for drivers if not already as these older drivers start to retire there wont be too many people with the licences to do the job.

I always wanted to drive a bus or a truck, long distance. My neighbour worked all over Europe and I tagged along when I was younger to help, I loved it.

Now lads, I know when it beds down, it's not all plain sailing, but what job is.

My problem here is the salary, it's too much of a drop to take. The wife would disown me.

if your a long distance lorry driver you shouldnt be worried about your wife disowning you she will most probably get fed up of you being away and leave you,
as for long distance stuff forget it, its romantised in your head, you will be working up to 15 hrs a day for if your lucky E 110 - 120 a day
i know some lads doing these hrs for E80 a day, sleeping and living in a small truck cab
, urinating at the side of a lorry in the middle of the night, if you lucky to be parked somewhere with a toilet you will have to get fully dressed
walk across a carpark smelling of urine then back to the lorry undress and try to sleep again.
most of the food you will eat is fast food muck, you sleeping pattern will be completely haywire getting up at 2am driving for maybe 6 hrs
told to park and go asleep again get up at 6pm to be ready for another 15 hr shift.
you will be under time pressure most of the time on the road and if you have an accident your automatically blamed. most of the company's will expect at least 2 weeks away,
you get on a 10 hrs ferry ride have some food and go to bed to be woken by a complete stranger undressing in your cabin
then he will most likely snore for the next 8 hrs, 4 to a cabin on some ferries all complete strangers.

i have done all of this and more i could go on all night about the crap drivers have to put up with take a fools advice and stay away from trucks,
i don't want to ruin your dream but this is today's reality in the world of truck driving, ps iv left loads of other crap out

    There's no future in it.

Automation will remove most of the driving and they'll only have a jobs bridge minimum wage lad in the cab to press the red button if something goes wrong.

Every truck company is developing autonomous trucks. Google it and see how far they've come.

Dublin bus are hiring in drivers, they are in the process of fitting out some training buses again with a view to training people up from the regular B license themselves..

Do you know how to apply for the job? Or when the jobs will be going up? Looked at the Dublin bus website and couldn't see anything.

Could you settle for being a luas driver?!

The newly negotiated salary band are more than reasonable ;-)

Nothing current on the website, but I know they are refitting a number of new buses for the training fleet so if your interested it might be worth a phone call or email to the HR department.

Can't speak for the op but the luas aren't recruiting right now and won't be until at least next year.
