Long story short, I am 26 years old and have a pass degree in German and Anthropology from NUI Maynooth. A 4 year degree that took me 6 to get because I didn't apply myself in college and had no interest. I was completely clueless when I was going into college and had no realistic knowledge of what the future would hold in terms of employment opportunities. I have only worked in menial retail jobs throughout the last 6 years or so.

My German is not good enough to get job with it and I had no interest in getting a job through it because they all seem to be desk jobs, customer service roles ect. Although at this stage I would take anything if it paid ok but as I stated before, my German is not fluent which every company requires. I have though about going to Germany to work on it but as it would be a giant undertaking I am unsure of this and have thought about another option.

I have recently applied to go to Cathal Brugha Street to do a 2 year course which will lead to me becoming a chef, the reason for this is as I was trying to decide what direction to go in, I concluded that doing something I had an interest in was a good way to go. The only course I found which I had any interest in and that had other benefits like, cost, length (as my age is getting up there) and employment prospects for the future was this one. I don't like working at a desk and think that this was a reasonable choice based on my situation.

I am currently working as a Kitchen Porter to gain some insight into a professional kitchen and it is very very demanding, now I am doubting my decision to pursue this route... It just seems such hard work for not that much money whereas sitting at a desk, although perhaps boring would be an easier existence.

So I just don't know what to do... I just want to start a job that pays somewhere in the region of 25,000 a year at this point. Don't want to go back to college, just want to to start working! But job searching for me is overwhelming because I am unsure of what is the right way to go about it. I search online for jobs a lot but they require specific experience or qualifications which I do not posses. Sites like Jobs.ie ect never seem to have anything which I would be eligible for, plus the fact that my degree is only a pass degree in a subject which requires absolute fluency to benefit from it. Even the kitchen porter job I recently got I had to lie and say I worked in a kitchen before to get it.

Is there any career advice places you could recommend me? What would you do in this crappy situation? How do you go about looking for work?

    Any advice is greatly appreciated.

If I was in your position, I would definitely work on the German. What good is a degree if you have no skills to back it up? Even working in a supermarket in Germany would increase your fluency.
Everyone has to start somewhere, it is not helpful to have a minimum income in mind. You can always work your way up to a decent wage. It is the experience you need right now!
What is it about 'desk jobs' you hate the idea of so much? There are tonnes of really cool jobs based from a desk! If your German improved, you could do translating, it is supposed to be great money and you could work in the courts, garda stations, hospitals etc.
