Hi all, friend has decided to move away from console gaming and into PC gaming. He was going to buy the new Alienware PC but I have him convinced to build his own.

He is looking for an i7 6700, z170 mobo, 650W psu, 1080 gtx, nice case, 16gb ram, 250gb ssd, 2TB hdd and and ideally 27" monitor 1440p 144 hz (I presume g-sync would be best if possible).

Ref the monitor does g-sync make a massive difference v a 1440p 144hz monitor without it?

He won't be looking to overclock. He has a controller he can use and will probably throw in an evo 212 for cooling the cpu.

Do you think it would be possible to build the above for around €2,200 as thats his budget?
He isn't going to be building till end of September/start of October so just trying to see if teh budget is somewhat in the right area.

Have to say, G-Sync monitors are expensive!

If your friend is building in September/October, hopefully AMD RX 490 will be close - Freesync monitors are a good bit cheaper.

You seem to have 2 cpu coolers in there K.O.Kiki. I think he wanted the 1080 over the 1070 he is trying to future proof as much as possible. Agree the free-sync monitors seem to be cheaper than the g-sync. Will the RX 490 rival the 1080?

Futurproofing is a waste of time and money. Get a little more than you need and upgrade when you need more, far better value for money than buying a world beater when you don't need one.

I'd get an i5 now and nice peripherals, 1070 will push 1440p144 fine. Will the i7 have an advantage at 144hz?

Ah yeah, knock 30-odd off the price then.
From benchmarks I've seen, the 212 Evo & Pure Rock are equal in performance.

Problem is that, if your mate wants a 27" G-Sync monitor he can only afford a 1070 at this price point.
    If he wants a 1080, he'll need make do with a 24" :o

That said, a 1070 with a 1440p monitor won't have any problems for years.

No idea on RX 490, no specs have leaked.

Cheers for the replies gents. Personally I wish I had the money to build a system like this and 2nd the time to play games lol.

All points taken on board and will pass on. How does the free-sync fair out v g-sync?
Does anyone here have experience of both?

There's no point in spending oodles on the Z170 if there is going to be no over clocking. The SSD is also too small - games should be on the SSD at that budget, you'll find loading times much faster in something like FO4, and I mean massive difference. Personally I would go with the i7 I think there's only about €100 in it.

G-Sync/Free Sync basically do the same thing. Monitors personal preference. You really need to see it. I'm more than happy with 3440x1440p @ 75Hz V sync on. Others need 100Hz+. Coming from console gaming I would have thought 75Hz would be plenty but as I say you need to see it.

Edit if you are going high refresh 1440p - go with a 1080 IMHO. Again there's only about €150 in it at the moment.
