Airside Pass/Security Clearance?

Is it hard to get security clearance and an airside pass for Dublin Airport if you have a criminal record?

Is it different if you would be working for a contractor on a construction project instead of for an airline or the airport itself?

Depends on the company policy, best bet is to check with company the job is with then ask on here.

Don't know the difference between the employee vs a contractor in terms of the background checks as I've only ever applied as a permanent employee however I do know of a guy who was due to start with me years ago in a job at the airport and he failed the background checks as he had one assault conviction going back a good few years.

They don't give have a list of convictions available to the general public that says what would preclude you from obtaining a pass so it's just apply and it will be either a yes or a no. Also it can't be appealed if it is negative. Either way I'd be upfront on all applications both potential employers and the forms given by the DAA for the pass. If you have a conviction and you state that you don't regardless of that conviction it would be a no.

As Strumms said above, not sure if contractors are treated differently than permanent employees, but DAA issue the airside passes and for them to do that they need a garda clearance cert. They give you the form to fill in and they send it off to xxxx - this can take a number of weeks the first time (it needs to be repeated every few years as well) so this can delay you getting a pass (and presumely starting work).
Don't believe there is an appeals process! Should be more info about the process, including the forms buried on the DAA website somewhere.

It's the company I already work for that has got the contract for work at the airport - I am not applying for a new job. My job know about my record and I haven't hid it from them. It was more if the DAA would issue the pass to me because of it.

Doesn't sound good. I have a conviction for assault as well. Was hoping that it might be different if you were a contractor instead of a full time employee. I am working with a construction company and I know there are a couple of others in the same situation

If you declared the conviction to your employer and settled amicably with the Gardai you stand a reasonable chance.

The only way to know for sure is to fill in the form, send it off and see what comes back. Otherwise maybe give the Access & ID Centre a call and ask their advice.. 018144630 / 018144639

I'm sure it will be fine, I know people in there with worse convictions and that includes members of the Airport Police

Good to hear - would like to work out there if I could. Would airport police not have to be cleared like Gardai?

Yes but if your conviction dates back far enough it can become irrelevant to them.

For example : Say you were 19 now and got in a fight and got done for assault, you'd never get in but roll on 13 years and you're applying now and say it happened back in 2003, you've a lot higher chances of getting in as you've matured, clean record since with your head down and in a full time job

The Criminal Justice (Spent Convictions and Certain Disclosures) Act 2016 is in force since April this year and provides for certain convictions to be treated as spent after 7 years, following which they need no longer be disclosed for most jobs. Whether this applies in an individual case is something which an individual may wish to research for him/herself or discuss with a solicitor.

My conviction is from this year so unfortunately will be a while before it's wiped even with that new system but good to know about it.

I did call that number but they weren't definite on anything - said it depends on the offence/when it happened etc. I filled out the forms anyway but not very hopeful about it.
