SatNavs in Halfords

Think this qualifies as a BA. Ordered a TomTom Go 610 online last week (ordered Tuesday evening for pickup in my local Halfords last Friday) and the price was reduced online by 50 quid for trading in my old SatNav. I only had the unit left (charger thrown away ages ago and no idea where the windscreen mount was) so I couldn't plug it in to see if it even worked, but it was still accepted, and my shiny new 610 came down to e199. It's STG£180 on Amazon right now.

I believe the 50 quid trade in would be different depending on how much you were spending, but 20% off for an old knackered SatNav seems like a BA to me.

Their online chat confirmed to me that they would honour the offer without a trade.
And I can confirm that I picked up a new dashcam last week with this offer, plus an extra 10% off that they were running with no trade in.
I reserved the item online and all discounts were applied, I then paid for and picked it up in store a couple of days later.

If you already have a smartphone (sic), try Waze.

    Yep!

Sat navs are a thing of the past no matter how much garmin try to convince otherwise. They've been getting away with charging a fortune over the years.

Google Maps offline maps are the best imo. Served us well on a recent trip to Mexico.

I don't agree with this statement. I've been using various App-based SatNavs on my Android phone for the last few months as a test, and have had varying success with them, but I don't think they're as accurate as a dedicated device, which is why I bought one specifically for my forthcoming trip to the States - the last thing I want when I'm driving in the middle of New Mexico is to go out of range of a cell tower and lose my signal. Admittedly, this may be down to the phone I use (WileyFox Swift), but I'm happy to put my faith into a one-device-one-use thing for this more than anything else.

Plus I hate the way my podcasts pause for a few second while directions are read out, but that's more of a personal thing. :D

With the difference you can't give any feedback if anything has changed or is incorrect :)

I thought in the beta programmes on Android you can provide feedback? Otherwise defeats the purpose of them

You can give feedback about the app itself, and the new features.

With Waze besides reporting hazards/traffic/police and sharing your drive, you can report map issues/errors (ie: turn not allowed, exit missing), "pave" new roads. Of course, if you want, you can also head to the map editor and fix the elements yourself. :pac:

Ah in waze, yeah that's handy.
I seen that on google maps about a crash on the M50 and the popup from waze came up with an option to download the app itself

Wonder in time will they merge the two apps and features

I believe there will be even greater information/reports/traffic sharing between maps and waze, but they won't completely merge them.. Mainly because waze edits are not validated as such before released to the public. A map change in waze might go live in 2-4 days, and it comes from the root (ie: estate under construction appears on waze because a user drove around and paved the roads).

Google validates elements in Maps, and they would have to employ hundreds to validate waze map edits.

Are any of the dashcams any good?

The Nextbase dashcams are very good, most have gps built in that show the speed you were doing and your location at any given time. Clarity is also top notch, no issues with reading car number plates. Have one fitted in a car, van and truck all very good.
