Lely Splendimo

    Hi everyone.
I recently purchased a 9 ft lely splendimo classic. The user manual says to mount the mower so that the lower hinge pin is about 55cm above the ground. I find that I have to have it about 40cm, otherwise the side of the cutter bar closest to the tractor is above the ground. Has anyone else come across this? Thanks in advance

Best to eyeball the height within reason, my mower is always running lower than 55cm at that point but I go by the driveshaft, it should be near enough level from the tractor to the mower.
As for the heal up off the ground, are you letting the ram on the mower down fully? also check that the right arm on the tractor isnt wound up too much.
Finally, a silly question but did your mower come with topping skids and are they on the mower at the moment?

The user manual probably doesn't allow for uneven or hilly ground.

The mower doesn't have topping skids. Yes the ram is down fully, spool in the float position. The drive shaft is angled down at about 15 to 20 degrees

There`s a chain and plate setup on the pivot point of the mower just at the gearbox. On mine I never had reason to adjust this but it may not be installed in the correct position. As far as I know this may cause the heal from sitting properly. If its a new mower than get onto lely and have them send someone out. Most of these mowers come from abroad in crates an are assembled here by the local machinery suppliers so its possible it is not setup correctly.

Mine doesn't have the chain setup. I am thinking also that it might not have been assembled properly but I can't see anything obvious

You could do a heap of damage to it if it not assembled correctly. I`d hold off using it until you get someone out from Lely.
The Splendimo is a good mower Ive never had an issue with mine and I`m fair rough with machinery, the neighbors would hardly lend me an old bale spike if I asked!

Thanks for all the advice. I'll get on to Lely about it

I love this post. Most lads tell us how good an operator they are. I would be a good man to mind machines but am as awkward as fcuk operating them.

I usually end up buying cheap secondhand scrap and spend more time repairing them than using them.

I went to local machinery man lately to buy a topper he tried to sell me a Lely splendimo said they were a life time job for topping and mowing, i came within inches of buy one but was afraid some of the land would be to rough for it. What are they like topping rough ground not so much stones just more humps and bumps with a bit of bog deel thrown in for good measure he also sold pottinger mowers he said they were better then the Lely but more money too. Any opinions anyone.

I don't use mine for topping. Only mow meadows with it.

Rough ground and mowers don't go well together.

No machine is at its best on rough ground, tractor included. If on rough ground just drop a few gears and take it handy. Neither a mower nor a topper will give a clean cut if it's only hitting the ground intermittently.

kverneland knives fit mine, a splendimo , button and clip holder , euro apiece cheaper than lely, 70E for a box of 25 incl vat
if you stand behind the mower lookin at the bed ,discs rotating to the right take RH knives

They are agco now afaik,so any massey dealer shpuld stock em

Youl need left and right for every second disc, depending on direction of rotation

Are lads happy with them as a mower? Seen a good few up on Donedeal lately. One was 3.6 meter, I was thinking you would be fairly quick topping a field it that width.

have 2.4m one here, very happy with it had 5'6" before (held good value when traded in) Low hp will drive it ( often use behind Mf265) use for topping and mowing. blades changed in seconds

Does anyone know if spare parts are still available since agco took them over?

If the seat's wet, sit on yer hat, a cool head is better than a wet ar5e.

Not happy with the mower, several issues

Its built for the continent ie when transporting it along the road the bed is on the right hand side, it hangs out pretty far onto the other side of the road (into oncoming traffic!!) It is dangerous on Irish roads.
When mowing the heal of the bed gathers lumps of grass/silage, if you weren't paying attention you'd end up gathering half a round bale under the mower
The quick blade change system goes to sh1te after a couple of seasons work, the clips become rust welded to the plates so they become a b1tch to remove.
I found the after sales support to be non existent, I don't know if it was my local dealer or Lely but neither of them returned phone calls or emails.
Had mine 3 years when the 5 bolts holding the gearbox and lift arm sheared off. Ended up a nightmare job trying to get the broken bolts out, I don't know if they sheared out of bad design or poorly assembled but either way I got no help from Lely. Eventually found a dealer in the UK with a gearbox housing to sell, but the price of the part was ridiculous, over £1000 sterling, the dealer there did his best for me but again no budge from Lely with regard to getting me the part for a reasonable price. I ended up buying a second hand gearbox housing from the USA!!

Bottom line avoid them mowers like the plague, I don't think I would ever look at anything Lely again

Very bad experience with a 3.6m Lely here. The above about sums them up, complete hapes of dung. If you want a durable well built mower with an actual quick flail change buy a Krone

completely different experience here, would buy another if they were still sold new.( if I ever upgrade tractor I might look for lely 2.8m mower conditioner)
Aren't all makes of mounted mowers sold on RHS of tractor? If you wind up lift arm on that side of tractor you should be ok on road. ( although most new mowers sold now fold a bit past 90 degrees)
all mounted mowers come into Ireland in knock down form and assembled
here so I was told to check gearbox bolts after a certain no of hours.

word of warning on the 2.8 non conditioner, they are useless to cut through a swarth while finishing out short ground.
because or the nine foot width they have an odd number of discs
the disc under the gearbox and the one beside it rotate in the same direction so they dont clear grass as well as they should and end up pulling a mown swarth along creating lumps , a pain in the hole , possible cure would be to put a hat disc on the second hub in ,
you need to leave enough width on the headlands starting off so you have full width on the backswarth or twill drag the swarth beside it
mower has about 1200 acres of silage cut and maybe 300 of topping done and some is rough going , had to put 1 bearing in the bed , not a big job but other than that she's been reliable, knife changing is fiddly and does not qualify as quick change .
not a hape of dung but there's better mowers out there at near enough the same money
She's non conditioner maybe the one's with conditioners don't suffer the same problems
