Hi im considering applying to some fund accounting positions but one thing im concerned about is that ive read the hours are long.

im trying to find out more about what exactly is the norm?

How many hours in a week?, what kind of hours, e.g 9:00am to 7:00pm or later?

Is it often that I would have to work weekends?

Are there peak periods in the year where long hours are common or is it at the end of each month I can expect to be working late hours?

Is there overtime or are most positions salaried and thus no overtime paid?

When I left college first (11 years ago), I worked on two weekly pricing funds - one on a Monday and the other on a Thursday.
It wasn't uncommon that I worked past midnight and on one month in particular I recall my overtime was more than my salary.
However, that was just my experience but if they say you may work late I'd imagine it will be 9 onwards, 7pm wouldn't really be considered late.

From what i hear, salaries and prospects are at an all time low, and a ridiculous amount of regulation and compliance (without extra headcount) mean it's a grim industry to be in.

    Jesus dont do this job.
I used to work in fund accounting in 3 separate companies. In the IT department, so wasnt stuck doint the OT the uys were.
I have never felt a sorry for any bunch of individuals as i did for the people in that line of work.
They did so much overtime it was insane. Most of them starting at 9 and working at least til 7pm every night and maybe 2 or 3 nights a week until 11pm or later.
Very few of them got paid overtime. If they did get overtime the companies would not pay for the first hour of overtime (as if they werent even working that hour), just free time for the company. Their overtime rate was awful. And then when they did make any money from overtime the company would promote them, which meant no overtime. So for an extra €2000 a year the company would get all the overtime they wanted off them and not have to pay them anymore.
If any of them was really fast and got out on time it was considered they didnt have enough to do, so they would give them more funds, enough to keep them in until after 7pm again.

Most of them take this because they have to be slaves like this until they get experience and on to the next job. But it wasnt uncommon to see most of them who had been doing the job 10 years plus in different companies and were still doing it.

Burnout and stress is extremely high.

    Horrible, horrible job.
