Histopathology Training Scheme

Anyone have experience with the histopathology training scheme in Ireland?

From what I've read, there's no membership exams for path, only fellowship.

    How competitive is entry?
How well set up is it?
What are the career prospects like?

I hadn't replied in the hope that someone with more helpful knowledge would be along..
I'm not sure about membership/fellowship. IIRC listening to the NCHDs, there are 2 or 3 'big' exams. No real junior registrar period you do your 2 years SHO then 5ish as an SpR.
I've no idea about competitiveness. Pretty sure the Dublin schemes are experiencing a shortage of registrars. There was a kerfuffle a year or two ago where NCHDs on certain schemes outside of Dublin wanted to be rotated through the Dublin schemes to get the experience on offer.
Again, I wouldn't be the best to be answering but I think career prospects are pretty decent. The really good NCHDs are closely mentored and kept in contact with so when a job comes up.. The NHS is very short on consultant histo pathologists so locums going over there. There's some private work but AFAIK it tends to be those on the old style public contracts that do the private work. I don't know of any fully private histo pathologists.

Your best bet would be to contact a lab or two and ask to shadow the NCHDs there. Try a big lab like St James or CUH and a 'small' one like RVEEH, BSH tralee, Rotunda/NMH/Coombe.
